Camping near Camargo, Kentucky
Camargo is a small community in Montgomery County, Kentucky, positioned as a practical launching point for trips into the Red River Gorge region and the western edge of Daniel Boone National Forest. Most travelers base here to reach Natural Bridge State Resort Park and the surrounding Geologic Area, both a short drive east on the Mountain Parkway.
Campground options range from full-hookup private RV parks to state-run sites and rustic retreat centers. 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge and Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground cater to RV travelers, while Whittleton - Natural Bridge State Resort Park sits inside the park boundary with direct trail access. Ryders Ranch Campground and Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center round out the nearby choices for tent campers and groups.
The surrounding terrain is forested Appalachian foothills with sandstone cliffs, arches, and creeks. Sites at state and private grounds tend to be wooded and moderately shaded, which shapes both temperature and site selection during the warmer months.
Things to do near Camargo
The main draw is hiking. Natural Bridge State Resort Park includes 2,200 forested acres with 22 miles of trails, a 60 acre lake, two campgrounds, lodging, and dining facilities, and is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest and adjacent to the Red River Gorge National Geologic Area. The signature sandstone arch is reachable on foot or by skylift, and Whittleton Arch is just across the street from the campground and accessible via a hiking trail.
Park recreation includes boating, swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, with canoe and kayak rentals available. Beyond the park, the Red River Gorge area offers rock climbing on hundreds of bolted routes, guided ziplines, underground kayak tours in flooded mining tunnels, and UTV tours.
Travelers with dogs should note that pets are not permitted on the Natural Bridge State Resort Park hiking trails, except for the Henson Arch Trail and Whittleton Trail.

The camping season around Camargo runs heaviest from spring through fall. Whittleton at Natural Bridge State Resort Park is open March through October, and reservations are accepted. Peak demand aligns with wildflower bloom in April and May, summer vacation weeks, and October leaf color, when weekend sites fill weeks ahead.
Winter camping is possible at some private grounds, but due to weather, Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at their campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. Travelers are advised to contact the park directly for available resources during months conducive to freezing temperatures.
Summer thunderstorms are common and can trigger flash flooding in the Gorge's narrow drainages. Fall brings cooler nights, drier weather, and heavy weekend traffic on the Mountain Parkway around peak color, typically mid to late October.
How to book campgrounds near Camargo
State park sites at Natural Bridge are booked through the Kentucky State Parks reservation portal on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. For fall color weekends and holidays, booking near the full window opens is recommended.
Private campgrounds such as 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge, Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground, and Ryders Ranch Campground handle bookings directly through their own websites or third-party platforms. Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center primarily serves organized groups and retreats, with limited individual availability.
One rule to know before arrival: Kentucky State Parks prohibits the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds.
What to expect on-site
Sites vary widely in size and layout. Whittleton Campground has a relatively tight layout with a narrow turnaround at the end, which can be challenging for larger RVs, and vehicles under 30 feet are recommended. Private grounds like 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge and Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground generally accommodate longer rigs and offer standard hookups.
The area is on Eastern Time, a maximum of two tents per site is allowed with no exceptions, and off-trail activity is prohibited even in the campground area. Kentucky campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of eight people, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate.
Cell service is patchy in the Gorge's canyons and hollows. Plan to download maps offline, carry a paper trail map for longer hikes, and expect ridge-top signal only near overlooks and the Mountain Parkway corridor.
