Campgrounds and RV parks near Cawood, KY

Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area is the region's biggest draw, a 7,000-acre trail system with roughly 150 miles of marked trail open to ATVs, side-by-sides, and dirt bikes. Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park connects directly to it via the Putney Trailhead on the north end, and the Evarts Trailhead sits on the south side of the mountain. Kingdom Come State Park, atop Pine Mountain near Cumberland, is Kentucky's highest state park at 2,700 feet elevation. It features Log Rock, a natural sandstone bridge, and Raven Rock, a monolith soaring 290 feet at a 45-degree angle, along with a 3.5-acre lake stocked with bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and trout, pedal boats in warmer months, and 14 hiking trails. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park adds White Rocks, Sand Cave, and the Hensley Settlement, all reachable on foot or horseback from trailheads near Ewing, Virginia.

The prime RV window in this part of southeastern Kentucky runs from mid-April through late October. Many area campgrounds close between late October and early April, and the road up Pine Mountain into Kingdom Come State Park has hairpin turns and narrow one-lane sections that make it a poor choice for trailers or larger RVs, especially in wet or icy conditions. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for creek fishing and ATV riding, though afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring is the wettest stretch, with April and May bringing frequent rain that can swell Martins Fork and other creeks. Fall is the most popular window for hikers and photographers, with cooler temperatures, less rain, and hardwood color across Pine and Black Mountains from mid-October into early November. Winter camping is possible at year-round options such as Kingdom Come, and Black Mountain trails remain open year-round, but water may be shut off during freezing periods and cell service is limited across the ridges. The area maintains active bear populations, prompting strict food storage requirements in every season.

Expect narrow, winding mountain roads. Approaches from I-75 typically use US 25E through Cumberland Gap, then US 119 into Harlan County. Grades are steep in places, and the road to Kingdom Come includes hairpin turns and one-lane sections used as a two-way road, unsuitable for trailers or RVs, so large motorhomes should scout the route in advance. Hookups vary. Private RV parks near Harlan and Putney generally offer water and 50/30/20-amp electric, while Kingdom Come's primitive sites have no electric hookups, RV facilities, or running water at campsites. Cell coverage is spotty once campers leave the main highways, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Bring bear-safe food storage, expect ATV traffic on shoulders near trailheads, and plan grocery runs in Harlan or Cumberland before heading up the ridges.
