Campgrounds and RV parks near Clarkson, KY

The main draw is Mammoth Cave National Park. Mammoth Cave is an underground passageway with over 400 miles of naturally sculpted limestone and sandstone, making it the longest recorded cave system in the world. Ranger-led tours depart from the visitor center throughout the day, and cave tours are the park's most popular activity and often sell out, so purchasing tickets ahead of time through Recreation.gov is recommended. Nolin Lake is the closest water-based attraction. The lake has an abundance of bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish, and a sandy swimming beach provides relief during hot summer months. Boat rentals, swimming, and shoreline fishing are typical day activities. There are also about 9.2 miles of singletrack trails for hiking and mountain biking. Equestrian travelers access backcountry trails on the north side of the park through the horse camps, and families staying at the KOA typically split time between cave tours and on-site amenities.

Peak camping season runs from late spring through early fall. Season runs from March 1st to November 30th for Mammoth Cave and Maple Springs. Winter RV trips in the park are limited to Houchin Ferry, which remains open year-round for hardy off-season tent campers. Nolin Lake State Park itself operates seasonally from April through October, so it is not a winter option. Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest, and cave tour tickets often sell out weeks in advance. Spring brings wildflowers and cooler cave-tour conditions but also the year's heaviest rainfall, which can affect river ferry operations and low-lying sites. Fall delivers reliable weather: warm days, cool nights, and hardwood color through October. Winter camping in the region is quiet but requires planning. Kentucky State Parks have year-round campgrounds, but the system cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. Travelers should contact the park directly for available resources during freezing months.

Site type varies widely. Nolin Lake State Park offers 52 campsites split between 32 electric hookups and 20 primitive sites, and the campground includes hot showers, a camp store, and a dump station. Inside Mammoth Cave, hookups are limited: full hookups are available for only two RV sites at Mammoth Cave Campground, first-come, first-served only. Drinking water, dump stations, camp store, trash collection, hot showers, and flush toilets are available seasonally. Horse Cave KOA Holiday is the most amenity-heavy option in the area. It offers camping cabins, shady pull-thru RV sites, a swimming pool, mini golf, jump pillow, free fishing and a playground for the kids. A few operational notes: the Green River Ferry is subject to last-minute closings, and when the ferry is down it can take 45 minutes to get from the Visitor Center to the Maple Springs Campground and backcountry trailheads. Kentucky State Parks prohibits the importation of firewood from any state outside of Kentucky, to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer. Buy firewood locally.
