Camping near Clay, Kentucky
Clay sits in Webster County in western Kentucky, at the junction of Kentucky Route 109 and Kentucky Route 132 northwest of Providence. It is a small home-rule city with a population of just over 1,000, so most RV travelers use it as a quiet base while camping at lakes and recreation areas within a short drive.
The closest developed campground is Moffit Lake Recreation Area near Morganfield, a 140-acre county-run park built around a 64-acre stocked fishing lake with waterfront RV sites, cabins, and primitive tent areas. Riverview RV Park serves travelers looking for a simple hookup stop closer to town.
An hour south, the Lake Barkley and Land Between the Lakes corridor around Eddyville expands the options considerably, with Eddy Vegas Campground and Venture River RV Park catering to families. Across the Ohio River in southern Illinois, Cave-in-rock State Park adds a historic Ohio River option within day-trip range.
Things to do near Clay
Fishing anchors most trips in this area. Moffit Lake is stocked with catfish, bass, redear, bluegill, and crappie, and the ramp accepts boats of any size with electric motors. Larger-water anglers head south to Lake Barkley, reachable in under an hour, where Eddy Vegas Campground sits about three miles from the lake.
Families traveling with kids often build a day around Venture River Waterpark, which sits on the same property as Venture River RV Park and features water slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river. Off the water, the region offers wildlife management areas for hiking and hunting, small-town shops and museums in the coal-country communities, and the free Cave-in-Rock ferry crossing the Ohio River into Illinois for access to the Shawnee National Forest and Garden of the Gods.

Spring is the wettest stretch in western Kentucky, and campgrounds along the Ohio and Green River bottomlands can see saturated sites and short-notice flood advisories in March and April. Weather warms quickly through May, which is a strong window for fishing at Moffit Lake before summer crowds arrive.
Summer is peak season. Venture River RV Park fills alongside its adjoining waterpark, Eddy Vegas draws Lake Barkley boaters, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book out well in advance. Cave-in-rock State Park charges a higher nightly rate on those three holiday periods, so plan early.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and steady bass and crappie bites, making September through early November one of the most comfortable times to travel. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks such as Venture River and Eddy Vegas, though services at seasonal county-run sites may be reduced and cabin rentals become the more practical option in the coldest weeks.
Booking and reservations
Privately owned parks in the region generally take online or phone reservations directly. Eddy Vegas Campground books through Campspot and by phone, and Venture River RV Park accepts reservations by phone through its office. Both parks are open year-round and can usually accommodate mid-week arrivals with short notice outside of summer holiday weekends.
Moffit Lake Recreation Area is operated by Union County and lists sites on Campspot, with separate cancellation policies for daily campsites and cabins. A ten-dollar fee applies to all cancellations, and the county charges the first night's stay for cancellations made inside the short-notice window, so lock in dates once travel is firm.
Cave-in-rock State Park is run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The park's camping loop operates first-come, first-served, so contact the site office directly before arrival to confirm current rules and site availability.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Expect a mix of full-hookup RV resorts and simpler county or state park loops. Eddy Vegas Campground has 59 full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, back-in and pull-through configurations, and site lengths that reach 80 feet, making it one of the easier options for larger rigs. Venture River RV Park offers roughly 40 full-hookup RV sites plus 10 primitive sites, a bathhouse, and a small camp store.
Moffit Lake sites include 30 and 50 amp electric plus water, with two dump stations and three bathhouses on property, and primitive tent areas for a more rugged stay. Cave-in-rock's Class A sites include electric and can accept units up to 60 feet long, with showers, restrooms, and a dump station on site.
Cell coverage on Verizon and T-Mobile is reported as usable at newer parks, and shade is limited at recently built sites, so plan for direct sun in summer.

Fuel is very manageable here. Western Kentucky gas prices typically run 20 to 40 cents below the national average, often in the $2.90 to $3.40 per gallon range for regular and slightly higher for diesel. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), a Class B campervan can hit 18 to 22 MPG, and a travel trailer pulled by your truck depends on the tow vehicle. For a 500-mile loop to Land Between the Lakes and back, budget roughly $150 to $225 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Madisonville or Henderson where prices tend to be lowest, and use GasBuddy to spot deals along the Pennyrile Parkway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clay, KY?
Earlier is better, but you've got more flexibility here than in big national parks. Kentucky State Parks like Pennyrile Forest and John James Audubon open reservations up to one year in advance, and summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) typically fill 3 to 6 months out. Land Between the Lakes campgrounds book through Recreation.gov, also up to six months ahead, and Hillman Ferry fills fastest. For midweek or shoulder-season trips, two to four weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: if your first choice is full, check for cancellations 48 to 72 hours before arrival, sites open up constantly as plans change.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Clay, KY?
You're going to find Clay refreshingly easy to drive. The area is rural with gentle, rolling Pennyrile terrain, light traffic, and well-maintained two-lane roads. The Western Kentucky Parkway and Pennyrile Parkway (part of I-69) are wide, four-lane highways suitable for any size RV. Watch for occasional coal trucks on US 41A and farm equipment on county roads, especially during harvest in September and October. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so check the National Weather Service Paducah forecast before heading out. Winter ice is uncommon but possible from December through February. Pro tip: deer activity is high at dawn and dusk on rural back roads, so take it slow after dark.

Most Webster County area campgrounds include picnic tables, fire rings, and access to potable water fill-ups. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Clay since rural roadside fill points are limited, and the Pilot truck stop in Madisonville has both dump and water access.

Pickup is usually at the host's address in Clay or a nearby town, with delivery available for an additional per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, you'll see the exact nightly mileage allotment and overage rate before you book. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen package can actually be cheaper than driving to pick up the rig and stocking it yourself, especially for a short weekend RV road trip from Clay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clay,KentuckyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Clay, KY, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, no cash changes hands with the host. A security deposit is placed as a temporary hold on your card before pickup and is released after the trip once the host confirms there's no damage or excess cleaning needed. The deposit is separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues: take photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, empty the tanks if required, and refuel to the level shown at pickup.
