Campgrounds near Clay City, Kentucky
Clay City sits in Powell County at the western edge of the Red River Gorge Geological Area, one of the busiest outdoor destinations in eastern Kentucky. The town works as a practical staging point for RV renters heading into the gorge, with grocery stops, fuel, and the KY-15 and Mountain Parkway corridors leading directly to nearby campgrounds and trailheads.
Most overnight options cluster a short drive southeast around Slade and the Natural Bridge area. Natural Bridge is a 2,200 acre forested park and nature preserve with 22 miles of trails, a 60 acre lake, two campgrounds, lodging, and dining facilities, and it is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest and adjacent to the Red River Gorge National Geologic Area. Whittleton - Natural Bridge State Resort Park is the closest state-run RV campground, while private options include 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge, Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground, and Ryders Ranch Campground.
Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center rounds out the nearby options for group and family stays, giving renters a spread of choices from full-hookup private parks to forested state park loops.
Things to do near Clay City
Hiking is the main draw. Natural Bridge is a 2,200 acre forested park and nature preserve with 22 miles of trails, and the main sandstone arch is reachable on foot from Whittleton - Natural Bridge State Resort Park. Trails leaving directly from the Whittleton area connect to Whittleton Arch and continue toward the main Natural Bridge formation.
The surrounding Red River Gorge adds rock climbing, scenic drives, and paddling on the Red River. Boating and fishing are available on the park's Mill Creek Lake, though no gasoline engines on Mill Creek Lake are permitted. Families staying at 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge or Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground can reach most trailheads within a short drive.

The Red River Gorge sees its heaviest visitation from April through October, with weekends in October drawing peak crowds for fall color on the sandstone ridges. Booking well ahead is essential for autumn weekends at Whittleton - Natural Bridge State Resort Park and the nearby private parks.
Spring brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures, but also the wettest stretch of the year, so trails can be muddy and creek crossings run high. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; shaded sites at Whittleton and forested loops at Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground offer relief from the heat.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Due to weather, Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at their campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and travelers should contact the park directly for available resources if traveling during months conducive to freezing temperatures. Private parks vary in winter operating status, so confirm hookups before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Clay City
Whittleton - Natural Bridge State Resort Park is booked through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. For fall weekends, sites released at the twelve-month mark tend to book quickly.
Private campgrounds including 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge, Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground, and Ryders Ranch Campground are booked directly through each property. Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center handles group stays through its own office. Kentucky campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 occupants, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate. Confirm rig-length limits when booking, especially for state park loops.
What to expect at Clay City area campgrounds
Sites in the Natural Bridge area are forested and shaded, with tighter access roads than open-country RV parks. The one-way road into the Whittleton sites is narrow and getting backed in will take some patience and the right angle for some. Larger rigs are generally better suited to 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge or Ryders Ranch Campground.
Quiet hours and speed limits are enforced inside the state park. Speed limit is 10 mph in campgrounds, 55 mph on Hwy 11, and 23 mph in the rest of the park. Pet rules are strict on state park trails, with dogs restricted from most Natural Bridge hiking routes. Cell service is spotty deeper into the gorge, so download maps before arrival.
