Campgrounds and RV parks near Columbia, KY

Green River Lake is the main draw. The 8,200-acre reservoir supports boating, paddling, swimming, and fishing for bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie, and the adjacent Green River Marina rents pontoons, fishing boats, and other craft during the warm season. More than 28 miles of multi-use trails inside the state park are open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Off the water, day trips reach the Kentucky bourbon corridor to the north, Mammoth Cave National Park to the west, and Lake Cumberland to the south. Downtown Columbia offers a walkable square with local diners and seasonal farmers market activity. For families, the sand swim beach, playground, and mini-golf inside the state park make a low-effort day, and several public ramps around the lake allow launching without moving the RV.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, when the lake is at summer pool, the marina is fully staffed, and campground amenities are open. Summer weekends fill early, and lakefront loops at Green River Lake State Park are the first to book out. Weekday arrivals are noticeably easier than Friday and Saturday nights. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for cooler nights and fewer crowds. April and May bring reliable wildflowers and green-up, but also the wettest stretch of the year and an active severe thunderstorm season across south-central Kentucky. October delivers hardwood color across the ridges and comfortable daytime temperatures for hiking. Winter is quiet. The state park campground operates on a peak season roughly from April through October and is not available for winter camping, while some private parks in the area stay open year-round on a limited basis. Freezing nights and occasional snow are common from December through February, so travelers should confirm water availability before arrival.

Green River Lake State Park offers a mix of standard electric sites with water, tent-only areas without hookups, a central dump station, restrooms with showers, and a small grocery during the operating season. Pets on leash are welcome. Cell coverage is generally usable inside the park on major carriers, though it thins along the trail system and remote coves. Private parks around Columbia tend to be smaller and more utilitarian, with full hookups at many sites, laundry at some locations, and easier big-rig access from the parkway. Shade varies by site, so travelers relying on rooftop solar should ask about tree cover. Expect rural driving on the final approach to any campground: two-lane roads, limited overnight fuel, and few big-box stores after dark. Stocking up in Columbia or Campbellsville before check-in avoids backtracking.
