Campgrounds and RV parks near Crestwood, KY

Louisville sits a short drive south and is the region's main draw for families. Churchill Downs, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Louisville Zoo, and the Kentucky Science Center are all within easy reach. Louisville North Campground places visitors within a short drive of Churchill Downs, Falls of the Ohio State Park, and the Louisville Slugger tour. For hiking and wildlife, Charlestown State Park delivers the most rugged terrain in the area. Over 15 miles of trails ranging from easy to rugged take visitors into the forest past wildflowers, fossil outcroppings, and karst topography that includes large sinkholes, and bird watchers will find over 70 species including bluebirds, black vultures, and the occasional bald eagle. On the water, Taylorsville Lake supports boating and fishing. Anglers can target bass, bluegill and crappie, and a 16-mile trail system is shared between hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

Camping around Crestwood follows a clear seasonal rhythm. Spring brings unsettled weather and heavier rain, but wildflowers along Charlestown's ravines and cool paddling days on Taylorsville Lake make it a strong shoulder season. Trails can be muddy after storms, so plan for changeable ground conditions. Summer is peak season. Weekends fill early at both state parks and at Louisville-area RV parks, particularly around Kentucky Derby weekend in early May and during summer festivals. The Taylorsville Lake campground is popular during summer months, so booking in advance is recommended, especially for weekend stays or the more spacious sites toward the back of the campground. Fall delivers mild days, lower humidity, and strong color along the Ohio River bluffs. Winter access varies by park. Taylorsville Lake State Park operates on a seasonal schedule with the campground typically open into mid-November and closed through the coldest months, and Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so contact the park directly before traveling in those months.

Expect a mix of site styles. Public parks generally offer electric-only and full-hookup loops with modern bathhouses. Charlestown State Park's large campground features Class AA sites with water, sewer, and electricity as well as Class A sites with electricity and individual water, plus modern comfort stations and a dump station. Urban RV parks near Louisville are convenient but tight. Louisville North Campground sits on a compact lot in Clarksville, Indiana, and accommodates larger RVs with full hookups, though maneuvering can require care due to spacing between sites. Rail lines run near the property, so some campers note train noise during overnight hours. At Charlestown, only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite, with additional vehicles required to use the overflow parking lot. Cell coverage is generally strong across the region.
