Crofton camping overview
Crofton sits in Christian County in western Kentucky, roughly ten miles north of Hopkinsville and within easy driving range of the Pennyroyal region's lakes and forests. RV travelers use the town as a base for trips to Lake Malone, Lake Barkley, and the wider Pennyrile country, all reachable on rural highways with light traffic outside of peak summer weekends.
Close-in options include Horseshoe Acres Campground and Cadiz RV Park, both convenient for parties that want short drives to town services and lake access. For state-park style camping, Lake Malone State Park Campground fronts a 788-acre lake known for fishing, with hardwood forest and sandstone bluffs above the shoreline. Moon River Marina and Resort and Kamptown RV Resort round out the nearby private options, useful when state park loops fill up on holiday weekends.
Most sites in the area accommodate mid-size travel trailers and Class C motorhomes, with a mix of electric, water, and full-hookup configurations depending on the property.
Things to do around Crofton
Water recreation drives most trip plans. Lake Malone State Park offers a public boat ramp, a swimming beach, and fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish, with hiking trails climbing through hardwood forest and mountain laurel to overlooks above the sandstone bluffs.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, about twenty miles from Crofton near Dawson Springs, adds a sand beach, canoe, kayak, pedal boat, and rowboat rentals on 56-acre Pennyrile Lake, an 18-hole golf course, and a network of trails including the Lake, Clifty Creek, and Indian Bluff trails. Moon River Marina and Resort suits families who want boating and shoreline days on the water.
Off-water options include the Jefferson Davis State Historic Site obelisk in nearby Fairview and short drives to Hopkinsville for groceries, laundromats, and RV supplies.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Crofton. Days are mild, humidity is lower than midsummer, and hardwood foliage makes the Pennyrile trails and lake bluffs particularly scenic. Weekends fill first, especially at state park campgrounds, so booking a few weeks ahead is prudent.
Summer is peak season for families and lake users. Temperatures climb into the upper 80s with high humidity, thunderstorms are common, and beaches and boat ramps see heavy weekend use. Memorial Day through Labor Day marks the busiest booking window, and holiday weekends often require longer minimum stays at Kentucky state parks.
Winter access is limited. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee campground water availability during months when freezing temperatures are possible, and some seasonal campgrounds close entirely. Lake Malone State Park's campground typically operates from mid-March through the end of October, while Pennyrile Forest's main campground runs on a similar seasonal schedule with equestrian sites open year-round.
How to book campsites near Crofton
Kentucky State Park campgrounds, including Lake Malone State Park Campground and nearby Pennyrile Forest, are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance to the date, and must be made at least one day ahead of arrival. New inventory is released when the call center opens.
Expect a one-night minimum midweek and a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday arrivals at all state parks, with longer minimums during major holidays. Sites accommodate up to eight occupants and a maximum of two units per site.
Private campgrounds such as Horseshoe Acres Campground, Cadiz RV Park, Moon River Marina and Resort, and Kamptown RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, with policies that vary by property. Booking early is recommended for summer weekends.
What to expect on arrival
State park loops in this region are wooded, with paved or gravel pads, electric and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Pads at Pennyrile Forest are known for being sloped, so bring leveling blocks and extra extension cords. Bathhouses and dump stations are on site, and firewood is sold at the parks. Kentucky prohibits bringing firewood in from other states to slow the spread of Emerald Ash Borer.
Private parks around Crofton generally offer more full-hookup sites and longer pads suited to larger rigs, along with laundry. Cell coverage is usually workable near town and along the parkway corridors but can drop out in the deeper forest sections.
Pets are commonly allowed on leash. Golf carts require a paid permit at state park campgrounds.

kentuckytourism.com/things-to-do/outdoors/outdoor-recreation/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Crofton, Kentucky?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Crofton, KY. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on the fun part: planning stops at Lake Barkley and beyond.
drive.ky.gov/driver-licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Crofton RV rental?
Yes, and it is one of the best parts of booking with RVezy. Every motorhome rental Crofton booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered if you get a flat on the Pennyrile Parkway or need help leveling at a campsite. Protection plans cover most damage to the RV, and you can choose your coverage level at checkout to match your comfort. Hosts do not pick your coverage, you do, which keeps you in control from the moment you click Book. Coverage details, limits, and exclusions are outlined in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.

You can book your Crofton RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts, and there is a money-back grace period after booking so a quick change of heart does not cost you. Refunds beyond that window depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you are not left stranded. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Crofton?
Yes, your pup is welcome on the road. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Crofton options, and you can find them in seconds using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you are rolling, Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park allows leashed dogs on its hiking trails, and Lake Barkley State Resort Park, about an hour west, has miles of dog-friendly shoreline trails. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is also famously dog-welcoming. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about a quick post-trip vacuum, which keeps your security deposit return smooth and stress-free.
parks.ky.gov/dawson-springs/parks/resort/pennyrile-forest-state-resort-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Crofton?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many hosts offer RV delivery Crofton service straight to popular spots like Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, Lake Barkley, or even a friend's driveway in Hopkinsville. They'll drop the rig, level it, connect water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which listings offer it and check the per-mile delivery fee on the listing page. Pro tip: delivery is especially smart if you're flying into Nashville BNA (about 75 miles south) and want to skip driving a big rig on unfamiliar roads.
parks.ky.gov/dawson-springs/parks/resort/pennyrile-forest-state-resort-parkHow does mileage work, and can I get unlimited mileage on a Crofton RV rental?
You have options. Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, so you will see everything from generous daily allowances (typically 100 to 150 miles per day) to RV rental with unlimited mileage on select listings. For a short Crofton RV trip to Pennyrile Forest (15 minutes), Hopkinsville (15 miles), or Lake Barkley (about 60 miles), a standard allowance is usually plenty. Planning a bigger loop to Nashville (75 miles), Mammoth Cave (90 miles), or Louisville (180 miles)? Filter for unlimited mileage or higher daily caps. The exact allowance, plus any per-mile overage fee, is shown clearly on every listing before you book, so there are no surprises.

Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area runs Hillman Ferry and Energy Lake Campgrounds, both ideal for an RV camping Crofton extension. Pro tip: state park sites release on a rolling basis through the Reserve America system, so check back if your first choice shows full.
parks.ky.gov/things-to-do/lodging/reserve-a-campgroundWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Crofton?
April through mid-June and September through late October are the sweet spots for a Crofton RV trip. Spring brings dogwoods blooming across Pennyrile Forest with daytime temps in the 65 to 78°F range, while fall delivers spectacular oak and maple color and crisp 60 to 75°F days. Summer (mid-June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, but it's prime swimming weather at Lake Barkley. Winters are mild but variable, with January lows around 25°F. Insider tip: aim for the second week of October. The foliage along the Pennyrile Parkway is unreal and the campgrounds clear out after Labor Day.
weather.gov/pah/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting one in Crofton?
You will do great, and you are not alone. Many first time renting an RV trips happen right here on RVezy. Every host gives a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering driving, the propane system, slide-outs, and dumping tanks before you leave. Crofton's surroundings are forgiving for new drivers: US-41 north and south of town is straight, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to interstate driving. If you are nervous, start with a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or a smaller travel trailer. Better yet, request delivery so the host parks and sets up everything for you. With 24/7 roadside support included in your protection plan, you can relax into the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are covered, and help is one phone call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on the Western Kentucky Parkway, a dead battery at Pennyrile Forest, or need a tow back toward Hopkinsville, support dispatches help fast. For RV-specific questions (how the awning retracts, why the fridge will not cool), message your host directly through the app since they know their rig inside and out. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip, giving you two safety nets backing every mile.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Crofton, KY?
Crofton is a fantastic launchpad. Popular RV road trip from Crofton routes include: Mammoth Cave National Park (90 miles east, about 90 minutes), Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (60 miles west, 75 minutes), Nashville TN for live music (75 miles south, 90 minutes), Bowling Green and the Corvette Museum (75 miles east), and Louisville's bourbon distilleries (180 miles northeast, about 3 hours). For a multi-state loop, head south into Tennessee, west into Land Between the Lakes, then north along the Ohio River, all within 4 hours of base. Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, but US interstate trips are absolutely encouraged.
nps.gov/maca/index.htmHow much will fuel cost for my Crofton RV trip?
Easy to budget for. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs around 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but usually 10 to 14 MPG. Kentucky gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and there are convenient fuel stops right on US-41 in Crofton and along the Pennyrile Parkway at Mortons Gap. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the Pilot/Flying J app help you find diesel and RV-friendly pumps with high clearance and pull-through access along your route.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far ahead should I book a campground near Crofton?
Plan ahead for the best sites, but you've got more flexibility here than at coastal hotspots. Kentucky State Park campgrounds (including Pennyrile Forest and Lake Barkley) open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the official parks.ky.gov system. For peak weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and October leaf-peeping), book 3 to 6 months out. Mid-week stays in spring and fall often have availability just days ahead. Federal sites at Land Between the Lakes book through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Insider tip: Pennyrile Forest's lakeside loop fills first, so set a reminder when that 12-month window opens and grab a waterfront spot.
parks.ky.gov/things-to-do/lodging/reserve-a-campgroundWhat are driving conditions like around Crofton?
Refreshingly easy. Crofton sits on US-41 with the Pennyrile Parkway (I-69) just minutes away, giving you wide, low-traffic four-lane roads ideal for new RV drivers. The terrain is gently rolling, not mountainous, so you won't face steep grades or sharp switchbacks. Watch for occasional spring thunderstorms (March to May), summer afternoon pop-ups, and rare winter ice from December to February. Deer are active at dawn and dusk in the surrounding farmland, so avoid driving after sunset when possible. Pro tip: the truck-friendly Pilot at Mortons Gap (Exit 37 on I-69) is the easiest stop in the area to fuel up, dump, and stretch your legs.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/Home.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Crofton?
You'll be well-equipped. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park offers electric and water hookups at every RV site, a central dump station, hot showers, laundry, and a camp store. Lake Barkley State Resort Park has 50-amp sites, full bathhouses, and a marina. Land Between the Lakes campgrounds range from full-hookup at Hillman Ferry to electric-only at Energy Lake. Most Kentucky state parks have a dump station included with your stay, and potable water fills are clearly marked. Private parks like Western Kentucky RV Park near Hopkinsville offer full hookups including sewer at the site. Pro tip: always top off freshwater before you leave the campground, the nearest fill on the road can be 30+ miles away.
parks.ky.gov/dawson-springs/parks/resort/pennyrile-forest-state-resort-parkWhat is actually inside the RVs I can rent in Crofton?
More than you would expect. A typical campervan rental Crofton or motorhome comes fully equipped: real beds (usually a queen plus convertible dinette or bunks), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a wet bath with toilet and shower, climate control with roof AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most Class C and Class A rentals include a TV, and many hosts add WiFi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or onboard generators for off-grid camping at Land Between the Lakes. Each listing shows photos and an amenities checklist, so you can match the RV to your trip style. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to make sure everyone on your family RV trip Crofton has a proper bed.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crofton%2C%20KentuckyWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RV rental?
Plenty of ways to customize your trip. Common add-ons on RV rental Kentucky listings include linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, generators for boondocking, bike racks, and pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Crofton, with most hosts offering a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Drop-off is typically the same location, though many hosts offer delivery and pickup at Pennyrile Forest or Lake Barkley for a per-mile fee. One-way trips (different pickup and drop-off) are sometimes available, just message the host through the listing to ask before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Crofton%2C%20KentuckyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. Your booking total (nightly rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) is charged through RVezy at checkout, so you never hand cash or cards to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately, usually authorized on your card a few days before pickup, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. Amounts and timing are shown clearly on every listing. Pro tip: take a few timestamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, the single best habit for a smooth deposit return. If anything is unclear, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Crofton during winter months?
Yes, winter RV trips are absolutely doable and underrated here. Western Kentucky winters are mild compared to the north, with daytime highs typically in the 40s and 50s°F and overnight lows around 25 to 35°F. Eight Kentucky State Park campgrounds, including Pennyrile Forest, stay open year-round, though water hookups may be turned off during hard freezes to protect the lines. When booking, message the host to confirm the RV has a working furnace, and ask about heated holding tanks if you're planning multiple nights below freezing. Bonus: winter is prime time for Mammoth Cave tours (constant 54°F underground) and bourbon trail visits with zero crowds.
