Campgrounds and RV parks near Cumberland, KY

Off-road riding drives much of the local tourism. Since opening in October 2005, Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area has become one of the top adventure destinations in southeastern Kentucky, with approximately 150 miles of trails on about 7,000 acres of rugged mountain terrain open to ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, Jeeps, and trucks. Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park sits directly at the Putney Trailhead on the north side of the mountain. Hiking centers on Kingdom Come State Park, where mountain-top overlooks give visitors vistas of Black Mountain and the Cumberland Plateau, and 14 short hiking trails explore giant rock formations like Raven Rock and Log Rock. The park also features a 3.5-acre mountain lake stocked with bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and trout. Families also visit the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum in Benham and the Portal 31 exhibition mine in Lynch, both within a short drive.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Pedal boats at Kingdom Come typically operate in warmer months, and off-road trails see their heaviest use from spring through the fall foliage season. Autumn is a signature time here: from Creech Overlook, a crisp autumn day can yield an expansive view of fall color across the Cumberland Plateau. Summer runs warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and July is historically the wettest month, averaging around five inches of rain. Weekends around off-road events fill trailhead campgrounds well ahead, so booking early matters. Kentucky State Park campgrounds require a two-night minimum on weekends year-round. Winter is cold and wet, with snow possible from roughly December through March at these elevations. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly. Black bears are active in the area during warmer months, and food storage rules apply.

Approach roads climb steeply into Pine Mountain and Black Mountain, and larger rigs should plan routes carefully. Carr Creek State Park offers utility hookups and a boat ramp on Carr Fork Lake. Natural Tunnel State Park has two electric-water campgrounds with sites that can accept up to 50-amp service, plus a primitive tent-only area. Bear country protocols apply. Black bears inhabit Kingdom Come State Park and adjoining lands in the Cumberland area, having recolonized extreme eastern Kentucky counties from neighboring states over recent decades. Store food in vehicles or provided containers and keep sites clean. Kentucky State Parks prohibits the importation of firewood from outside Kentucky to help prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale at state park campgrounds.
