Campgrounds and RV parks near Earlington, KY

The area is built around outdoor recreation on reclaimed mining land and forested state acreage. West Kentucky ATV Park, outside Madisonville, offers a large off-road trail system on former strip-mine terrain, popular with families traveling with side-by-sides and dirt bikes. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park is the main draw for hiking, swimming, and paddling, with a 56-acre lake offering pedal boats and row boats, miles of hiking trails, and an 18-hole golf course. Anglers can fish for bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass on Pennyrile Lake, and a Kentucky Fishing License is required. Further afield, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area west of Cadiz adds bison and elk viewing, planetarium programs, and lakeshore beaches within a day trip of Earlington.

Western Kentucky has long, hot, and muggy summers and cold, wet winters, and it is partly cloudy year round. The Pennyrile Forest campground is open March 1 through October 31, and private parks near Earlington run their fullest schedules across the same window when lake activities are in full swing. June through August is the busiest season for tourism in the Madisonville area, so weekend sites at Pennyrile Forest and popular private parks fill early. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping. Highs in April, May, September, and October are generally mild, and fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October across the Pennyroyal forests. Storms and severe weather are most common in spring, so RV travelers should monitor forecasts for tornado watches. Winter is the quiet season. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly before arrival. Many private RV parks in the area stay open year-round for full-hookup stays, though snow and ice events do occur from December through March.

Private RV parks in the Earlington and Madisonville area lean toward level gravel or grass sites with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups. Amenities vary: some parks include laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi, while smaller rural parks are more basic. Many host a mix of long-term residents and overnight travelers, so expect a quieter, neighborly atmosphere rather than resort-style recreation. At Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, the 68-site campground features utility hookups, a dump station, and a central service building with showers, restrooms, and laundry. The access road can present challenges with rough conditions that require careful navigation for larger rigs, and site conditions vary significantly throughout the campground. Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-69 but can weaken inside forested state park areas. Kentucky State Parks prohibit the importation of firewood from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds.
