Campgrounds and RV parks near Evarts, KY

The main draw is the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area, a roughly 7,000-acre trail system with about 150 miles of trails reached from the Evarts Trailhead to the south and the Putney Trailhead to the north. The majority of trails are multi-use and open to ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, jeeps, and buggies, with some restricted to ATV or dirt bike use only. The City of Evarts also has an ATV-friendly ordinance, allowing off-road vehicles on streets within city limits. Beyond the trails, Kingdom Come State Park on Pine Mountain offers short hiking trails to rock formations, a small stocked lake, and black bear viewing. Portal 31, an underground coal mine tour in Lynch, and the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum in Benham add rainy-day options. At Carr Creek State Park, the 750-acre lake supports bass, crappie, and walleye fishing.

Spring through fall is the primary camping window. Carr Creek State Park is listed as open year-round on the Kentucky State Parks reservation system, though water and other resources are not guaranteed during freezing months. Trails at Black Mountain are open year-round to all vehicles, but weather and mud can close sections after heavy rain. Summer is peak season for both RV parks and lake camping. Temperatures are warm but moderated by elevation, and weekends fill quickly with off-road riders and families using Carr Creek's beach. Booking several weeks ahead is wise, especially around holiday weekends and organized trail events in Harlan County. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong color across Pine Mountain and Black Mountain, making it a favored time for hikers and riders. Winter camping is limited: Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water availability at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly before arriving in cold weather.

Roads into Evarts wind through mountain terrain. They are paved and passable for RVs and trailers, but grades and curves are steady, so slower travel and mountain-appropriate braking are expected. Cell reception can be spotty in the hollows and on the trails. Full-hookup RV sites near town typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, shower houses, and dump stations, with many parks also providing ATV wash areas. Carr Creek State Park sites include water, electric, and sewer hookups and accommodate rigs up to fifty feet. Black bears live throughout the region, so food storage should be secured. Kentucky State Parks prohibits bringing firewood in from outside the state as part of Emerald Ash Borer prevention, and firewood is sold at the state park campgrounds.
