Camping near Ferguson, Kentucky
Ferguson sits in Pulaski County, immediately south of Somerset and just minutes from Lake Cumberland, the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi River, with over 1,200 miles of shoreline. The lake, formed by Wolf Creek Dam on the Cumberland River, is the primary draw for RV travelers in the area.
Campground options within a short drive suit a range of styles. General Burnside Island State Park Campground occupies Kentucky's only island state park, with 94 sites on a roughly 400-acre island in the lake. Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort and Cumberland Cove Campground offer lakeside stays with full-hookup pads and family amenities, while Happy Camper RV Park Lake Cumberland and Off The Hook RV Campground provide level, full-service RV sites geared to longer stays.
The combination of state park, US Army Corps of Engineers, and private campgrounds gives RV travelers flexibility on price point, hookup level, and how close they want to be to the water.
Things to do near Ferguson
Lake Cumberland is the center of activity. Anglers target largemouth, smallmouth, white and Kentucky bass, bluegill, crappie, rockfish, and walleye, and marinas along the lake rent pontoons, ski boats, and houseboats. Boat launches at General Burnside Island State Park Campground and at Corps of Engineers day-use areas make it easy to get a rig and trailer on the water.
On land, the 18-hole golf course on General Burnside Island is a regional favorite. Daniel Boone National Forest is a short drive east and offers hiking to features such as Natural Arch and Yahoo Falls.
History travelers can reach Mill Springs Battlefield, a Civil War site with interpretive exhibits and a driving tour, in about 20 minutes from most campgrounds on the north shore.

The main camping season around Ferguson runs roughly spring through fall, matching the operating windows of most Corps and state park campgrounds on Lake Cumberland. General Burnside Island State Park Campground typically opens in spring and closes in the fall, and water service at Kentucky State Park campgrounds is not guaranteed during months when freezing temperatures are possible.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures and the busiest weekends, and sites at popular Corps campgrounds and at Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort can be difficult to secure without advance booking. Expect a two-night minimum on peak-season weekends at Kentucky state park campgrounds.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for RV travel: mild days, cooler nights, fewer boats on the water, and easier reservations. Winter camping is possible at a small number of year-round private parks, but most public campgrounds are closed and lake-focused amenities are shut down.
How to book campgrounds near Ferguson
Reservations at General Burnside Island State Park Campground and other Kentucky State Park campgrounds are handled through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by phone. Sites can be booked up to 12 months in advance and require at least one day of lead time. A one-night minimum applies on weekdays, and a two-night minimum applies on peak-season weekends at most Kentucky State Park campgrounds.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Lake Cumberland are booked through Recreation.gov. For summer weekends and holidays, book as early as possible.
Private parks such as Happy Camper RV Park Lake Cumberland, Cumberland Cove Campground, Off The Hook RV Campground, and Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and often offer weekly and seasonal stays.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Lake Cumberland is hilly and wooded, with mature hardwood forest and steep grades on some access roads. Corps of Engineers sites on the lake can have moderate to severe grades on entrance and exit roads, and some state park sites sit on slopes that require careful leveling. RV travelers should check site details for length and slope before booking.
Most developed campgrounds provide water and electric, with full hookups more common at private parks. Bathhouses with hot showers, laundry, dump stations, and boat ramps are standard at the larger campgrounds. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Somerset and Ferguson but can drop in coves and forested pockets.
Kentucky State Parks prohibit importing firewood from outside Kentucky to help prevent the spread of Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is sold on site. Golf carts are allowed only with a permit purchased at check-in, or for guests displaying a disability hanging tag.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ferguson, KY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ferguson, KY?
RV rental in Ferguson is one of the most affordable ways to experience Lake Cumberland country. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches sit around $250 to $400 nightly. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can find cheap RV rental Ferguson options if you travel midweek or during shoulder months like April, May, September, and October when Lake Cumberland weekend demand drops. Tip: booking a travel trailer with delivery to a nearby Army Corps of Engineers campground lets you skip towing entirely and put more of your budget toward pontoon rentals at State Dock.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferguson%2C%20KentuckyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ferguson, Kentucky?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ferguson, Kentucky. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal recreational vehicles, even for larger Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and we'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the US? An International Driving Permit (IDP) paired with your home license works perfectly. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process really is, which means you can focus on planning the fun parts.
drive.ky.gov/driver-licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Ferguson?
Every RVezy booking in Ferguson includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head toward Lake Cumberland feeling covered. At checkout you choose between protection plan tiers, each designed to cover most damage to the vehicle while you are driving, parked at General Burnside Island, or set up at Kendall Campground. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind without arranging your own coverage. You select the plan level yourself, so you can match protection to your trip style and focus on enjoying Lake Cumberland.

The cancellation policy is consistent across listings and is managed by RVezy. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your Lake Cumberland plans stay on track. Tip: book early to lock in popular Army Corps campgrounds near Somerset while keeping flexibility if life shifts.

They level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through the awning, propane stove, and systems. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campsite number. Top picks include Lake Cumberland State Resort Park in Jamestown (full-hookup sites, marina, and the Lure Lodge restaurant), Kendall Campground below Wolf Creek Dam (reservable water and electric sites with a stocked trout stream nearby), Cumberland Point Campground near Nancy (shaded sites with several right on the waterfront), General Burnside Island State Park (Kentucky's only island state park, just minutes from Ferguson), and Waitsboro Campground south of Somerset (quiet, lakefront, Corps-managed). Book Army Corps sites on Recreation.gov and Kentucky State Parks sites on the official state portal. Local tip: Burnside is the closest full-service option and fills up fast.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/391When is the best time to take an RV trip from Ferguson?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Ferguson, KY RV trip, with the absolute sweet spots being May, June, September, and early October. Spring brings dogwood blooms and daytime highs in the 70s, summer hits the mid-80s with warm lake water (Cumberland averages 85°F by July) and the famous Thunder Over the Lake fireworks, and fall delivers cool 60s-70s temps with stunning Daniel Boone National Forest color from mid-October to early November. Winters are mild but chilly (30s-40s) and most Army Corps campgrounds close November through March. weather.gov/jkl/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, and Ferguson is one of the friendliest places for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, water tanks, propane, awning, and dump procedures, so you leave knowing exactly which button does what. Your host is a text away during your trip, too. If you would rather skip driving, choose a host who offers delivery to Lake Cumberland State Resort Park or General Burnside Island and arrive to a fully set-up site. Tip: a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer is the easiest first-timer pick for the curvy roads around Somerset.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something breaks down during my Lake Cumberland trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-27, a dead battery at Burnside Island, or a generator hiccup at Kendall Campground, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. Cell coverage is solid along US-27 and KY-80 through Somerset, and most of the Lake Cumberland shoreline gets a usable signal too. Your host is also a direct line for questions specific to their RV. Tip: snap a quick photo of your tire size and license plate at pickup, it speeds up roadside service calls dramatically when you are deep in Pulaski County.

Class A motorhomes average 7-10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10-14 MPG, campervans and Class B vans hit 18-22 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers usually see 10-13 MPG. Kentucky gas prices typically run below the national average, with stations in Somerset on US-27 being the most convenient fill-ups before heading to Lake Cumberland. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $70-$90 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Somerset rather than the smaller stations near Jamestown or Burnside, the price difference can be 20-30 cents per gallon.

For the best campgrounds near Ferguson, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. parks.ky.gov/campground-informationWhat are the driving conditions like around Ferguson and Lake Cumberland?
Driving an RV around Ferguson is very manageable, even for first-timers. US-27 is the main north-south corridor through Somerset, a wide four-lane highway perfect for any size rig. KY-80 runs east-west with gentle curves, and the spur roads down to lakefront campgrounds (KY-761 to Cumberland Point, KY-90 to Burnside) have a few moderate grades but no white-knuckle climbs. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk in Pulaski County, and be aware that summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly over Lake Cumberland. Winter ice is rare but possible December through February. Pro tip: avoid the narrow boat-ramp access roads at sunset on summer Saturdays, they get congested with returning fishermen.

Army Corps sites like Kendall and Cumberland Point offer water and electric hookups (typically 30/50 amp), flush toilets, hot showers, and dump stations, though full sewer hookups at each site are rare. As long as you return the RV in the same condition and follow the host's tank instructions, the hold is released after your trip. Yes, winter RV rental near Ferguson is doable and a quiet, beautiful way to experience Lake Cumberland. Daytime temperatures December through February usually sit in the 40s with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s, so look for listings with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working furnace, and plan to use shore power at any campground that stays open. Lake Cumberland State Resort Park keeps a portion of its campground open year-round, while Kendall and Burnside typically reopen by spring. The bald eagle viewing tours below Wolf Creek Dam each January are a hidden Kentucky gem. Tip: message the host to confirm winterization status and bring a small ceramic heater for extra cabin comfort on cold nights.
