Campgrounds and RV parks near Fleming-Neon, KY

Water recreation anchors most trips. Visitors can enjoy boating, swimming, and fishing on the 750-acre Carr Creek Lake, or relax and enjoy a picnic along its sandy shoreline, and the park features the longest sand beach in the Kentucky State Parks system. A full-service marina rents pontoon and fishing boats. Breaks Interstate Park delivers the region's marquee scenery. The park has 17 hiking and walking trails covering a total of 13 miles, numerous overlooks, a pool, and a driving loop, plus a Canyon Rim Zipline over the river gorge. Whitewater rafting includes Class IV, V and VI rapids during the dam release in October. At Natural Tunnel State Park, a chairlift, guided tours, and scenic hiking trails let visitors explore a limestone tunnel more than 850 feet long and 10 stories high, alongside a seasonal pool and amphitheater programs.

Late spring through mid-fall is the strongest window. Kentucky State Parks have year-round campgrounds, but due to weather they cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources during inclement months when freezing temperatures are possible, so contact the park directly before traveling in winter. Sites fill fastest on summer weekends and around holiday weeks. Virginia parks run a shorter camping season. At Natural Tunnel, Cove View Campground has 16 sites for tents, RVs or pop ups up to 38 feet with water and 20 and 30 amp hookups, and Lover's Leap Campground has 18 sites up to 50 feet with water and 20, 30 and 50 amp hookups. Camping is only available from the first Friday in March until the first Monday in December, while cabins, lodges and yurts are available year-round. The chairlift runs from the first weekend in May through the last full weekend of October, which frames the best window to visit. Fall brings peak color across Pine Mountain and the Breaks canyon rim, plus scheduled dam releases that drive whitewater season on the Russell Fork. Winter travel is possible but mountain roads can ice quickly, and many seasonal facilities such as pools, zip lines, and camp stores close.

Expect narrow, curving mountain roads with grades and switchbacks. Large vehicles should be ready for sharp turns and steep inclines when approaching Breaks Interstate Park. Fuel up in larger towns like Hazard, Whitesburg, Pikeville, or Big Stone Gap before the final approach. Cell service is extremely limited throughout Breaks Interstate Park, with Verizon users possibly getting a weak signal near the lodge and visitor center, while AT&T and T-Mobile have virtually no coverage in the surrounding dead zone, so download maps offline. Kentucky State Parks prohibit the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds. Sites are generally shaded and wooded, with some pull-throughs and many back-ins. Access to the water varies by site, and reaching the beach requires descending a significant number of steps. Wildlife sightings including deer, wild turkey, and black bear are common, so store food securely.
