Campgrounds and RV parks near Fort Knox, KY

The General George Patton Museum of Leadership on post covers armor history and World War II leadership and is generally open to the public with proper ID at the visitor control center. The U.S. Bullion Depository can be viewed only from the perimeter road: no visitors are permitted inside or on the grounds. Off-post, Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area near Brandenburg offers hiking, mountain biking, and Ohio River overlooks. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Clermont has a large trail network and welcomes leashed dogs. Mammoth Cave National Park, about 75 miles south, has the longest known cave system in the world and offers ranger-led tours that book out weeks ahead in summer. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail runs through Bardstown and Clermont, roughly 30 to 40 minutes east.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Kentucky. April and May bring mild days and wildflowers but also the region's wettest weather, with May typically the rainiest month and frequent thunderstorms. September and October deliver crisp air, hardwood color, and lower humidity, which is why shoulder-season sites fill quickly. Summer is hot, humid, and busy. Highs sit in the mid-80s Fahrenheit from June through August, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Independence Day, Thunder Over Louisville in April, and Kentucky Derby weekend in early May all pull RVs into the Louisville and Fort Knox corridor and can absorb regional inventory. Book those weekends well in advance. Winter is cold and wet rather than snowy, with only a few inches of snow in a typical year. Kentucky State Parks keep many campgrounds open year-round but warn that water service is not guaranteed during freezing weather. Most private parks near Fort Knox stay open all year, though some amenities scale back from December through February.

Sites at the private parks near Fort Knox are typically level, full-hookup pads on gravel or concrete, with 30- and 50-amp service, Wi-Fi of variable quality, and on-site laundry. Tree cover is moderate: expect sun on the pads and shade around the perimeter loops. Cell coverage is generally strong along the I-65 corridor but drops in the creek valleys around Otter Creek and Bernheim. Traffic on U.S. 31W and Dixie Highway can be heavy near shift changes at the post, so time arrivals outside weekday rush hours if possible. Deer, ticks, and chiggers are common in wooded areas from spring through fall, and thunderstorms can move through quickly in summer. Access to the Fort Knox installation itself requires a background check at the visitor control center for those without a DoD ID. Plan extra time on museum-visit days.
