Campgrounds near Frenchburg, Kentucky
Frenchburg sits in Menifee County in eastern Kentucky, just north of the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest. The town serves as a quiet base for RV travelers heading to the Gorge, with the Gladie Visitor Center on State Route 715 functioning as the Forest Service information hub for the area.
Camping options range from private RV parks to state park campgrounds. Nearby private options include 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge and other river-adjacent sites in the heart of the Red River Gorge, along with Outpost RV Park and Campground, Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground, and Landing Strip RV Park. For a full-service state park experience, Natural Bridge State Resort Park covers 2,200 forested acres with 22 miles of trails, a 60-acre lake, two campgrounds, lodging, and dining facilities, and is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest and adjacent to the Red River Gorge National Geologic Area. Whittleton - Natural Bridge State Resort Park is the main wooded loop for RVs and tents.
Most travelers use Frenchburg as a launch point for hiking, climbing, and paddling in the Gorge, with grocery and fuel stops in Slade, Stanton, and Campton along the Mountain Parkway.
Things to do near Frenchburg
The Red River Gorge is the region's main draw. The Wild and Scenic Red River carved cliffs, natural arches, and waterfalls within Daniel Boone National Forest, and rock climbing is a signature pastime, with hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, and ziplining also popular. The Natural Bridge sandstone arch stretches more than 75 feet long and 65 feet high, and can be reached by trail or by the park skylift, which climbs from near the park entrance and ends within about 600 feet of the arch. The skylift typically operates spring through fall, weather permitting.
From Whittleton Campground, Whittleton Arch is reached via a pleasant trail that begins at the campground, and the main Natural Bridge trail network is close by. Families often combine a Gorge hike with a stop at Miguel's Pizza in Slade, a longtime climbers' gathering spot, or a paddle on the Red River with an outfitter based in Slade or Campton.

The Gorge is a four-season destination, but conditions vary sharply. Peak season is summer, roughly June through August, when families and tourists visit in large numbers and trails and campgrounds can be crowded. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for swimming and paddling, and weekend sites often fill weeks ahead at Whittleton and the private parks around Slade.
Fall is the marquee season for foliage. Mid to late October is typically the sweet spot for peak color in the Red River Gorge, with higher elevations changing earlier, often in the first half of October, while the valleys and lower trails usually peak closer to the last week of the month. By early November colors start to fade. Reserve October weekends as far in advance as the system allows.
Spring brings wildflowers and moderate crowds, with the tradeoff of frequent rain and muddy trails. December through February is cold with possible snow and ice, outdoor activities are limited, and some facilities may close or run reduced services for the season. Winter travelers should confirm openings before booking.
How to book campgrounds near Frenchburg
Whittleton at Natural Bridge State Resort Park is booked through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. The maximum reservation window is 12 months in advance to the date, and reservations must be made at least 2 days ahead of arrival. There is a 1 night minimum stay during the week at all Kentucky State Parks, and there is a 2 night minimum stay on peak season weekends, so customers arriving on a Friday or Saturday must stay a minimum of two nights.
Private campgrounds in the area, including 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge, Outpost RV Park and Campground, Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground, and Landing Strip RV Park, typically book directly through their own websites or by phone, with October weekends often reserved months in advance.
Kentucky State Parks prohibits the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds.
What to expect on-site
Sites vary widely in size and services. Whittleton Campground offers a mix of RV and tent sites, with electric hookups available on a portion of the loop and a separate area for tent camping. The campground has a relatively tight layout with a narrow turnaround at the end, which can be challenging for larger rigs, and shorter units generally have an easier time maneuvering.
Kentucky State Park campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 occupants; four adults and children 16 and under are included in the base rate, additional adults incur a per-night fee collected at arrival, and the maximum is two units per site, which may include one camper unit plus one tent. Cell service is thin in and around the Gorge, so download maps and confirmations before arrival.
Pets are not permitted on Natural Bridge State Resort Park hiking trails, with the exception of the Henson Arch Trail and Whittleton Trail. Plan pet walks accordingly.
