Camping near Hindman, Kentucky
Hindman sits in the Kentucky River headwaters in Knott County, deep in the eastern Kentucky coalfields. The town is small, and most camping options are spread across the surrounding ridges and hollows within a 30 to 60 minute drive. Terrain here is steep and forested, with narrow two-lane roads following creek bottoms, which affects route planning for larger rigs.
The closest developed campground is Carr Creek State Park, located along Kentucky Route 15 in Knott County, with a 39-site campground, a full-service marina, and a beach on the 750-acre Carr Creek Lake. Other nearby options include Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park, Willie Begley Memorial RV Park, Buffalo Camp & Ride Campground, and Crockettsville RV Park, which cater to a mix of lake visitors, ATV and side-by-side riders, and travelers passing through the Appalachian mountains.
Expect a rural setting with limited services between towns. Grocery runs, fuel, and propane are easiest in Hindman, Hazard, or Harlan, so plan resupply stops before turning onto county roads.
Things to do near Hindman
Water recreation drives much of the summer traffic at Carr Creek State Park. The park features the longest sand beach in the Kentucky State Parks system, and the 750-acre lake offers bass, crappie, and walleye fishing along with miles of shoreline for pleasure boating. The marina rents pontoon and fishing boats, and the swim beach is a draw for families.
Off-highway vehicle riding is the other major regional activity. The Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area is a 7,000-acre trail system in Harlan County open to ATVs and off-highway vehicles, with approximately 150 miles of trail. Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park sits at the Putney Trailhead on the north side of the mountain, and Buffalo Camp & Ride Campground offers direct trail access for riders. Hikers can explore Kingdom Come State Park and the Pine Mountain corridor within about an hour's drive.

Peak camping season runs late spring through early fall. Summers are warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy rain can lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas, a real concern in the narrow creek valleys around Knott County. Lake levels at Carr Creek can rise quickly after storms.
Spring brings wildflowers and green-up but also some of the wettest weather of the year, along with pollen. Fall is often the most comfortable window for RV travel: cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Cumberland Plateau, typically peaking mid to late October.
Winter camping is possible at some parks that stay open year-round, but conditions are cold and wet. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and campers should contact the park directly for available services when traveling during months conducive to freezing temperatures.
How to book campgrounds near Hindman
Reservations at Carr Creek State Park are handled through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be booked up to one year in advance online or by phone. There is a one-night minimum stay during the week at most parks and a two-night minimum on peak-season weekends, with longer minimums on major summer holidays.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park, Willie Begley Memorial RV Park, Buffalo Camp & Ride Campground, and Crockettsville RV Park, generally book direct by phone or through the operator's website. Weekends during OHV riding season and summer holidays fill early, so reserve well ahead.
Kentucky parks prohibit campers from importing firewood from any state outside Kentucky, an effort to help prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer. Firewood is available for sale at the state park campgrounds.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into these campgrounds are steep and winding. Rigs over about 30 feet should map routes carefully: some approach roads, including narrow one-lane sections, are unsuitable for large trailers, and certain routes shown by GPS are actually ATV trails that should be avoided. Call the campground for RV-friendly directions before you leave.
Cell service is spotty across Knott, Perry, and Harlan counties, and travelers commonly lose signal on approach roads, so download maps offline. At Carr Creek State Park, all 39 sites include water and electric hookups and can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet, with sites varying between open and shaded and the outer loop generally offering more room.
Expect a working Appalachian landscape: former mining ridges, active coal roads, and small mountain communities. Bring bug spray for summer and layers for shoulder seasons.
