Campgrounds and RV parks near Hodgenville, KY

The main draw is Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. At the Birthplace Unit, visitors can tour the visitor center, watch a short film on Lincoln's early childhood in Kentucky, climb the 56 steps of the neoclassical Memorial Building to see the symbolic log cabin inside, and walk short trails on the grounds, including the paved Pathway of a President and the Big Sink Trail. The Boyhood Home at Knob Creek, about 10 miles northeast on U.S. 31E, adds a reconstructed cabin and the historic Knob Creek Tavern. Entry to both units is free, and kids can complete a Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center. Beyond the park, Hodgenville itself has the Lincoln Museum and the downtown Lincoln statue. Longer day trips reach the Kentucky Bourbon Trail around Bardstown, Mammoth Cave National Park, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, and downtown Louisville.

Central Kentucky has four distinct seasons with warm, humid summers and cool, wet winters. Mid-April through June and September through mid-October are generally the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Spring brings the heaviest rainfall of the year, with May typically the wettest month, so expect muddy sites and pack accordingly. Summer is peak visitation for the Lincoln birthplace and for nearby Mammoth Cave, and it is the busiest booking window at private RV parks in the Elizabethtown corridor. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in June, July, and August, and humidity can feel oppressive. February 12, Lincoln's birthday, draws a small crowd of history travelers to the park each year. Winters are cool rather than harsh, but overnight lows drop below freezing regularly from December through February. Kentucky State Parks note that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during months when freezing temperatures are possible, and many private parks reduce services or close bathhouses in the coldest weeks. Confirm hookups directly with the campground before booking a winter stay.

Most RV parks in the corridor between Hodgenville and Elizabethtown are practical, road-trip-oriented properties rather than destination resorts. Expect level gravel or paved pads, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer at full-hookup sites, with a mix of pull-through and back-in configurations. Bathhouses, laundry, and small camp stores are common but not universal, so confirm amenities when booking. Cell coverage is generally reliable across LaRue and Hardin counties, and most parks offer Wi-Fi of varying quality. Terrain is gently rolling, and the region has few grade or clearance issues for larger rigs. Big-box grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are concentrated in Elizabethtown along the US-31W and Lincoln Parkway corridor. Kentucky State Parks limit campsites to a maximum of eight occupants and, at most parks, two units per site. Non-licensed vehicles such as golf carts are restricted at state park campgrounds, with rules varying by park. Private parks set their own policies on pets, quiet hours, and campfires.
