Campgrounds near Horse Cave, Kentucky
Horse Cave sits in south-central Kentucky along I-65, a short drive from the main entrance to Mammoth Cave National Park. The town is part of the cave country corridor between Cave City and Park City, which puts RV travelers within easy reach of the 52,830-acre park that preserves the world's longest known cave.
Most RV travelers base themselves at private parks along the I-65 exits rather than inside the national park, since electric hookups inside the park are limited to two first-come, first-served VIP sites at Mammoth Cave Campground. Nearby options include Horse Cave KOA Holiday, Sugar Maple RV Park, Cave Country RV Campground, Dino Valley RV Park, and Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park Camp Resort, each offering full or partial hookups and easy highway access.
The area works well for family trips built around cave tours, small theme attractions, and short hikes, with restaurants and supplies concentrated near the Cave City and Horse Cave exits.
Things to do near Horse Cave
Cave tours are the anchor activity. Mammoth Cave is an underground passageway with over 400 miles of naturally sculpted limestone and sandstone, making it the longest recorded cave system in the world, and ranger-led tours depart daily from the visitor center. Cave tours often sell out, so purchasing tickets ahead of time through Recreation.gov helps secure the tour, day, and time desired.
Above ground, the park offers 14 miles of hiking and biking trails near the visitor center, plus paddling and fishing on the Green and Nolin Rivers. Families staying at Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park Camp Resort typically build in pool and activity time on site.
Outside the park, Horse Cave and Cave City host roadside attractions geared to kids, including a dinosaur-themed park, a wildlife zoo, mini golf, and go-karts. The American Cave Museum in downtown Horse Cave adds a rainy-day option.

The main visitor season runs late spring through fall. Season runs from March 1st to November 30th for Mammoth Cave and Maple Springs campgrounds inside the national park, so off-season travelers rely on private RV parks around Horse Cave and Cave City, or on Houchin Ferry Campground, which stays open year-round.
Summer is peak. Cave tours sell out on weekends and holidays, and campground reservations fill quickly, so booking early is essential. Expect hot, humid surface conditions and a constant cave temperature in the mid-50s Fahrenheit regardless of the season above ground.
Spring brings frequent rain and higher river levels, which can affect paddling and riverside camping: Riverbank Camping permits are only available for purchase up to 7 days in advance and are not issued if the river level is 20 feet or higher. Fall offers cooler days, thinner crowds, and reliable foliage color from mid-October into early November. Winter keeps cave tours running most days, but surface trails can be muddy or icy.
How to book campgrounds and tours
Private parks near Horse Cave, including Horse Cave KOA Holiday, Sugar Maple RV Park, Cave Country RV Campground, Dino Valley RV Park, and Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park Camp Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book summer weekends and holiday periods several months out.
For sites inside the national park, campground reservations open up to 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov. Reservations are required through recreation.gov, although two RV sites with full hookups at Mammoth Cave Campground are first-come, first-served only.
Cave tours are booked separately on Recreation.gov and often fill before campsites do. Mammoth Cave Backcountry permits are required for overnight camping at designated campsites and floodplain, and can be obtained online up to 6 months in advance or in person at the Mammoth Cave Campground kiosk or Visitor Center.
What to expect on arrival
Follow posted park signage rather than GPS. From the north, take Interstate 65 to Exit 53 (Cave City Exit), turn right onto KY-70, follow 70/255 as it becomes the Mammoth Cave Parkway in the park, and continue to the Visitor Center. Southbound travelers use Exit 48 at Park City.
Inside the national park, drinking water, dump stations, camp store, trash collection, hot showers, and flush toilets are available seasonally, but most sites lack electric hookups. Maximum RV/trailer length is 38/26 feet. Cell signal is unreliable around the visitor center and campground loops.
Private parks along I-65 generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Bring layers for cave tours, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and a headlamp for evenings at the campground.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Cave%2C%20KentuckyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Horse Cave, Kentucky?
Renting an RV in Horse Cave is refreshingly simple. A regular driver's license is all you need to drive any RV available on RVezy in Kentucky, with no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement required, even for a 38-foot Class A motorhome. The primary driver must generally be 25 or older with a valid driver's license. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. RVezy verifies your ID quickly before pickup, so you can spend less time on paperwork and more time planning your Mammoth Cave tour.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Horse Cave rental?
Yes, and this is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in Horse Cave automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, giving you real financial peace of mind. During checkout you can choose from several protection tiers, letting you pick the level of coverage that fits your trip, whether it's a quick weekend at Hidden River Cave or a longer Kentucky RV trip. It's the kind of safety net that helps first-time renters relax and seasoned campers travel confidently.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Horse Cave RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book your Horse Cave RV trip with confidence. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and the cancellation terms are not displayed within individual listings. Depending on how far in advance you cancel, you may be eligible for a partial or full refund. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will issue a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. Review the current cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking for full details, especially helpful when winter ice storms or summer thunderstorms occasionally roll through the I-65 corridor.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Horse Cave RV rental?
Yes, many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Horse Cave, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Mammoth Cave National Park is dog-friendly above ground (pets must stay on a 6-foot leash and aren't allowed on cave tours, though kennels are available near the Visitor Center). Dogs also love walks on the Green River trails and the open lawns at Horse Cave KOA. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, and bring a portable water bowl, since summer humidity in Kentucky can climb fast.
nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Horse Cave?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. RV delivery in Horse Cave is offered by many RVezy hosts, who will tow or drive the RV straight to Mammoth Cave Campground, Horse Cave KOA, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Cave City, or a private property you've arranged. Your host will level the rig, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system, from the awning to the water heater, before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see available options and fees, which are often based on mileage from the host's location. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Horse Cave without ever towing a thing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Cave%2C%20KentuckyHow far can I drive on a Horse Cave RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have great options. Some RVezy hosts in Horse Cave offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (perfect for a longer Kentucky RV road trip), while others include a generous daily allotment (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small fee for extras. Each listing clearly shows the mileage policy before you book, so there are no surprises. From Horse Cave you're about 10 miles to Mammoth Cave Visitor Center, 35 miles to Bowling Green, 85 miles to Louisville, 95 miles to Nashville, and roughly 130 miles to Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. If you're planning multiple destinations, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Cave%2C%20KentuckyWhere are the best campgrounds near Horse Cave to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Horse Cave include Horse Cave KOA Holiday right off I-65 Exit 58 (year-round, full hookups, pull-thru sites); Mammoth Cave Campground inside the national park, near the Visitor Center (about 111 sites, open seasonally, RVs up to roughly 35 feet at most sites); Maple Springs Group Campground on the park's north side (electric and water hookups); Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Mammoth Cave in Cave City (full hookups, pools, family activities); and Diamond Caverns RV and Golf Resort in Park City. National park sites can book up quickly when reservations open six months ahead on Recreation.gov, so set a calendar reminder.
nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhen is the best time of year for a Horse Cave RV trip?
South-central Kentucky shines from April through early November, and each season has its own charm. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and highs around 65 to 75 degrees F. Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s, ideal for Green River paddling but busy at the caves. Fall (late September to early November) is a local favorite, with crisp 60 to 75 degree days and beautiful foliage. Winter is quieter and milder than much of the Midwest (typically 40 to 50 degree highs), and many parks like Horse Cave KOA stay open year-round. Booking the second week of October often delivers peak color and easier cave tour availability.
weather.gov/lmk/climateI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Horse Cave?
You absolutely will. First time renting an RV in Horse Cave is genuinely beginner-friendly: roads around Mammoth Cave (I-65, KY-70, KY-255) are wide, well-paved, and RV-friendly with gentle hills rather than mountain passes. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, dumping, and driving tips, and they stay reachable by message during your trip. If driving makes you nervous, choose a Class B campervan or travel trailer, or book a host who offers delivery so you can skip the driving entirely. Practice a few right turns in a large parking lot before heading to the park, and you'll feel like a pro within an hour.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a deep breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're at a Mammoth Cave trailhead or on I-65 near Bowling Green. The service covers issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a direct lifeline by message for quick questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Cell coverage is solid throughout most of Hart and Edmonson counties, though it gets spotty deep inside Mammoth Cave National Park. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it ready if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Horse Cave by RV?
You're sitting on one of Kentucky's most scenic launching pads. Popular options for an RV road trip from Horse Cave include Mammoth Cave National Park (about 10 miles, the obvious must-do), Bowling Green and the National Corvette Museum (35 miles south on I-65), Nashville, Tennessee for music and barbecue (95 miles south), Louisville for bourbon and the Kentucky Derby Museum (85 miles north), Lake Cumberland for boating (about 90 miles east), and Land Between the Lakes (around 130 miles west). Cross-border trips into Tennessee are fully allowed on RVezy rentals. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy booking. Ask your host about a one-way trip if you want to fly out of Nashville (BNA) instead of returning to Horse Cave.
kentuckytourism.com/How much should I budget for fuel on a Horse Cave RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 18 MPG for a tow vehicle when pulling a travel trailer. Kentucky gas prices typically run slightly below the national average, with stations along I-65 at Horse Cave Exit 58 and Cave City Exit 53 being convenient fill-ups. A weekend loop from Horse Cave to Mammoth Cave and back rarely uses more than a tank. GasBuddy and major travel center apps usually show the cheapest diesel in the region.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Horse Cave?
Earlier is better, especially for the national park. Mammoth Cave Campground and Maple Springs open reservations on a rolling six-month window through Recreation.gov, and peak summer weekends and October foliage dates can sell out within minutes. Horse Cave KOA, Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Mammoth Cave, and Diamond Caverns RV Resort typically have more availability and accept reservations through their own websites or Campspot. For a smooth trip, lock in your campsite first, then book your motorhome rental in Horse Cave around those dates. If Recreation.gov is sold out, check Houchin Ferry Campground inside the park as a backup option, and watch for cancellations a few weeks before your dates.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232037What are local driving conditions like around Horse Cave?
Driving an RV around Horse Cave is genuinely pleasant. Interstate 65 runs right through town with wide lanes and easy on-off access at Exit 58, and the local highways (KY-218, KY-70, KY-255) are well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle rolling hills, not mountain switchbacks. Important local note: the National Park Service warns visitors not to follow GPS directions blindly into Mammoth Cave, since some apps route through narrow gravel farm roads. Instead, take I-65 to Exit 53 (Cave City) or Exit 48 (Park City) and follow park signs. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and slow down on rural roads after rain. Fuel up before entering the park, since gas stations are limited once you're inside.
nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat hookups and dump stations can I expect at Horse Cave campgrounds?
You'll find a good mix to match any RV setup. Horse Cave KOA, Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Mammoth Cave, and Diamond Caverns RV Resort all offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer) plus on-site dump stations, laundry, hot showers, and Wi-Fi. Inside the national park, Mammoth Cave Campground has potable water, restrooms, hot showers, and a seasonal dump station, but most sites do not include electric hookups (a small number of sites with hookups are available). Maple Springs offers water and electric but no sewer at the sites. Top off fresh water and dump your tanks at Horse Cave KOA on your way into the park if you're staying at a Mammoth Cave site without sewer.
nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/macacampground.htmWhat amenities are typically included in a Horse Cave RV rental?
You'll feel right at home from minute one. Most RVs on RVezy in Horse Cave come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace, dinette or sofa seating with seatbelts for travel, and often a TV with DVD or streaming setup. Many hosts also include outdoor chairs, a propane grill, levelers, and a starter kit of paper goods. Wi-Fi and generators vary by listing, so check the amenities tab. South-central Kentucky summers are humid, so prioritize a unit with strong roof AC and ask your host about a screen room for buggy evenings near the Green River.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Cave%2C%20KentuckyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Horse Cave?
Hosts on RVezy in Horse Cave offer useful upgrades that can make your trip smoother. Common add-ons (with host-set fees) include bed linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generator hours for boondocking, bike racks, and pet cleaning options. Pickup is usually at the host's home base, with many offering delivery to Horse Cave KOA, Mammoth Cave Campground, or Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Cave City for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing, ranging from a daily allotment to truly unlimited. Bundling delivery, setup, and linens often costs less than booking add-ons separately, so ask your host for a package quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Horse%20Cave%2C%20KentuckyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and transparent. When you book your RV rental in Kentucky on RVezy, you pay the full rental amount through the platform using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit is placed as a separate hold on your card before pickup, then released after your trip once the host confirms there's no damage or excessive cleaning. To avoid deposit issues, do a quick walkaround with your host at both pickup and drop-off, take photos of the interior and exterior, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and dump the tanks if your rental requires it.
