Campgrounds and RV parks near Irvington, KY

The Ohio River is the main draw. Horseshoe Bend RV Campground and Boat Ramp sits on the river in Leavenworth, Indiana at mile 664.5 and offers a public double-wide concrete boat ramp for boating and fishing. Across the river, O'Bannon Woods State Park has a network of day-use hiking, mountain biking, and horse trails, plus the roughly 25-mile Adventure Hiking Trail loop through the park and Harrison-Crawford State Forest, with five overnight shelters available first-come, first-served. Families staying at O'Bannon Woods can use the Family Aquatic Center during the summer season; hours vary, so campers should check with the park office. The Blue River, Indiana's first designated natural and scenic river, flows through the park and offers fishing for smallmouth bass and catfish. West and south of Irvington, Bourbon Springs RV Resort places guests within reach of Kentucky's northern bourbon distilleries, and Fort Knox, Bardstown, and downtown Louisville are all within about an hour's drive for day trips.

Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Kentucky. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year in the Louisville area, so plan sites with good drainage and pack rain gear; thunderstorms can be severe and fast-moving, and this area is within the belt where spring tornadoes are possible. April through early June and September through late October offer comfortable temperatures for hiking at O'Bannon Woods and long days on the river. Summer is peak season. It runs hot and humid, and temperatures into the 90s Fahrenheit can occur anytime from May to October, with the Louisville area averaging about one day per summer reaching into the 100s. Book campground reservations several weeks out for July and August weekends, especially at state-park sites and river-adjacent parks. Winter is quiet. Louisville averages roughly 13 days a year that never warm above freezing, and cold daytime weather can occasionally spill into March or November. Some private parks reduce services in the off-season, and Horseshoe Bend operates roughly May through October; O'Bannon Woods State Park itself is open year round.

Roads into Irvington are mostly rural two-lane. Drivers of larger rigs should follow the campground's own directions rather than routing blindly by GPS, especially heading to Bourbon Springs RV Resort and to Horseshoe Bend, which sits at the end of a turn off SR 62. Cell service is spotty in the wooded areas near the river and inside O'Bannon Woods, so download maps before leaving town. At Indiana state parks, including O'Bannon Woods, smoking is not allowed in indoor facilities such as cabins, restrooms, shelters, and recreation buildings, and is prohibited within eight feet of any building entrance. Standard campground check-in and check-out is 2:00 p.m., with 5:00 p.m. check-in on Sundays and designated holidays. Sites at O'Bannon Woods are shaded and wooded; some have noticeable slope, so leveling blocks are useful. Full-hookup pads at private parks like Horseshoe Bend are gravel, level, and big-rig friendly.
