Campgrounds and RV parks near Jackson, KY

The main draw is Natural Bridge State Resort Park, which has over 20 miles of trails over uneven terrain from moderate to strenuous difficulty, including routes to White's Branch Arch, Henson's Cave Arch, and the Balanced Rock Trail, with five miles of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail running through the park. Just north, the Red River Gorge Geological Area sits inside Daniel Boone National Forest and draws climbers, hikers, and photographers to the Gorge's famous sandstone cliffs and over 100 natural arches, making it a world-class destination for rock climbing enthusiasts. Kayaking, scenic drives, and fishing round out the options. In Jackson itself, the North Fork Kentucky River and small-town restaurants give families an easy break between longer outings in the forest.

Spring and fall are the busiest windows. Cool nights, comfortable days, and peak leaf color pull heavy traffic to Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge on weekends from roughly late September through October, and again during April and May wildflower weeks. Reserve early for those months. Summer is warm and humid, with average highs in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Sites are generally available midweek, but weekends near the Gorge fill quickly. At Koomer Ridge, vault toilets are open year-round while flush toilets, showers, and drinking water run seasonally, roughly April through October. Winter is the quietest season. Whittleton and other seasonal state-park campgrounds reduce services from November through March, and Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. RV travelers who prefer solitude can still use year-round private parks and dispersed sites in the national forest, but should expect cold nights and occasional snow.

Terrain is hilly and wooded. Whittleton has a relatively tight layout with a narrow turnaround at the end, so vehicles under 30 feet are recommended. Larger motorhomes and travel trailers will find easier access at private parks closer to Jackson. Cell service is spotty inside the Gorge and at forest campgrounds. Bring paper maps or downloaded trail apps. Bears are present in Daniel Boone National Forest, so store food and scented items securely. Kentucky state-park campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 occupants, with 4 adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate. Pets are not permitted on the Natural Bridge State Resort Park hiking trails, except for the Henson Arch Trail and Whittleton Trail.
