Lancaster sits in Garrard County in central Kentucky's Bluegrass region, roughly 35 miles south of Lexington and a short drive from Danville, Berea, and the Kentucky River. Travelers using Lancaster as a base can reach a mix of small in-town RV parks, established family campgrounds, and larger interstate-adjacent parks within about 30 minutes.
The closest option is the Pioneer Playhouse RV campground in Danville, set on the grounds of Kentucky's oldest outdoor theater with basic hookups and shower facilities. South and east of Lancaster along the I-75 corridor near Berea, Oh Kentucky Campground, its sister property OH Kentucky Campground RV Park, and the nearby Walnut Meadow RV Park offer pull-thru sites, laundry, and dump stations for larger rigs.
Further south, Renfro Valley KOA Holiday in Mount Vernon sits in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. Together these parks cover overnight stopovers, family weekends, and multi-night trips exploring central Kentucky.
Things to do around Lancaster
The Lancaster area rewards a mix of history stops, small-town wandering, and outdoor time. Herrington Lake sits just west and offers boating, fishing, and swimming, while the Kentucky River corridor to the north brings kayaking, paddling, and riverside picnicking. Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site and downtown Danville, including Constitution Square, are within easy reach for a half-day out.

Central Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate, with four distinct seasons and rainfall spread across the year. Summers run warm and humid with July highs commonly in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, and thunderstorms are frequent through late spring and summer. Winters are cold enough to freeze hookup water lines, with average January lows near the mid-20s Fahrenheit and occasional snow from December through March.
Spring and fall are the prime windows for comfortable RV travel. April and May bring longer days and wildflowers along with the wettest stretch of the year, so campers should plan for muddy grass sites after storms. September and October tend to be drier and cooler, and fall foliage across the Bluegrass and Daniel Boone National Forest drives strong weekend demand.
Many area parks operate year-round with reduced services in winter, while some smaller riverfront and public campgrounds close from November through March. Reservations for holiday weekends and peak fall foliage fill weeks in advance.

How to book campgrounds near Lancaster
Booking systems vary by campground, so travelers should confirm before arriving. Pioneer Playhouse RV campground in Danville is best reached by phone to check availability, especially during its summer theater season. Oh Kentucky Campground, OH Kentucky Campground RV Park, and Walnut Meadow RV Park near Berea accept reservations through their operator websites and common third-party platforms.
Renfro Valley KOA Holiday uses the standard KOA online booking platform, with peak pull-thru and cabin inventory best reserved several weeks out for summer weekends and fall foliage dates. Reservations that include a Friday or Saturday night between May and early November are treated as nonrefundable full-payment deposits, so travelers should confirm dates before paying. For Kentucky state parks and Corps of Engineers lakes in the wider region, reservations are handled through recreation.gov or the individual park systems, typically on a rolling six-month window.
What to expect on site
Most RV parks in the Lancaster area offer gravel or grass pads with 30 and 50 amp electric service, and full-hookup sites are common at the larger properties along I-75. Walnut Meadow RV Park accommodates larger rigs with pull-thru sites, and Renfro Valley KOA Holiday advertises pull-thrus up to 75 feet with a seasonal pool running roughly May through October.
Expect basic amenities such as bathhouses, laundry, and dump stations at most parks, with camp stores and playgrounds at the family-oriented KOA and Oh Kentucky properties. The KOA also offers an outdoor camper kitchen, clean showers and restrooms, a laundry facility, and free park-wide Wi-Fi. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally strong along the I-75 corridor and in town, weaker in the river valleys. Travelers should carry a water pressure regulator, leveling blocks, and a surge protector.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lancaster%2C%20KentuckyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lancaster, KY?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lancaster, even for a 32-foot Class C motorhome. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. Renters generally need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the booking platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set to roll through the Bluegrass.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection or insurance included when I rent an RV in Lancaster, KY?
Yes, and this is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy: every RV rental in Lancaster comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. During checkout you'll choose the protection level that fits your trip, and that coverage helps handle physical damage to the RV so you can focus on enjoying Herrington Lake instead of worrying about a scratched bumper. Pro tip: pick your protection tier based on how far you're driving and where you're parking, lakeside sites along the Dix River can be tight, so extra coverage is smart.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Lancaster RV trip?
Life happens, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, with special considerations for events like natural disasters or severe weather, which can matter in Kentucky during spring storm season. You'll see the full cancellation details during checkout and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Lancaster RV rental, then contact RVezy support if plans change, they're available 7 days a week.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lancaster RV rental?
Absolutely, and Garrard County is wonderfully dog-friendly. Filter for Pet-Friendly when browsing pet-friendly RV rental Lancaster listings on RVezy, and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots (sometimes for a small cleaning fee). Once you're here, the trails around Tom Dorman State Nature Preserve are great for leashed walks with sweeping Palisades views, and many nearby campgrounds allow dogs on leash. Pro tip: pack a portable water bowl, Kentucky summer humidity in July and August is no joke for dogs, and message your host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lancaster%2C%20KentuckyCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Lancaster?
Yes, RV delivery in Lancaster is one of the easiest ways to start a trip, especially if you're new to driving a big rig. Many RVezy hosts in the Lancaster and greater Lexington area offer delivery to local campgrounds like Cummins Ferry RV Resort in Salvisa and Fort Boonesborough State Park near Richmond. The host hauls the RV to your site, levels it, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system from the propane stove to the awning. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy. Pro tip: delivery to the Herrington Lake area is popular for family reunions, ask early since summer weekends book up fast.

Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with many Lancaster-area listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and some advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. From Lancaster you're well positioned: Lexington is about 35 miles north (around 45 minutes), Red River Gorge is roughly 75 miles northeast, Mammoth Cave National Park sits about 150 miles west, and Nashville, Tennessee is just over 200 miles southwest. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state RV road trip from Lancaster across the Bourbon Trail, filter for unlimited-mileage listings up front, it usually works out cheaper than paying per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lancaster%2C%20KentuckyWhere are the best campgrounds near Lancaster, KY?
You're surrounded by excellent options. The best campgrounds near Lancaster include Cummins Ferry RV Resort in Salvisa with spacious riverfront sites, Fort Boonesborough State Park near Richmond with electric and water hookups plus a sandy beach on the Kentucky River, Chimney Rock RV Park in nearby Harrodsburg, and Walnut Meadow RV Park in Berea for year-round camping. Several of these are within 20 to 30 minutes of Lancaster, making them ideal bases for exploring Garrard County Distilling Company and Herrington Lake. Pro tip: book a riverside site at Fort Boonesborough for the easiest combination of hookups, hiking, and family activities.
parks.ky.gov/parks/recreation/fort-boonesboroughWhen is the best time of year for an RV camping Lancaster trip?
Lancaster is a true four-season destination, and the sweet spot for RV camping in Lancaster is mid-April through late June and again from early September through late October. Spring brings 65 to 80 degree days, blooming dogwoods, and foals in the surrounding horse pastures. Fall delivers crisp 50 to 75 degree weather and spectacular foliage along the Palisades of the Kentucky River, typically peaking in mid to late October. Summer is warm and humid (often 85 to 92 degrees), great for Herrington Lake swimming. Pro tip: avoid Kentucky Derby week in early May if you want lower rates, statewide RV demand spikes during that stretch.
weather.gov/lmk/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in a small town like Lancaster where the roads are wide and traffic is light compared to Lexington or Louisville. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through driving tips, leveling, hookups, the propane system, awning, and dump procedures, typically 30 to 60 minutes long. You can message your host anytime before or during the trip. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first rental, they drive much like a large pickup and are perfect for the rolling backroads around Garrard County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Lancaster trip?
You're covered, and you're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on US-27 or a battery dies near Herrington Lake, one phone call gets a technician dispatched. Your host is also just a message away to troubleshoot small issues like a tripped breaker or a stuck slide-out, often the fastest fix. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number in your phone before you leave Lancaster, cell coverage can get spotty along the Dix River gorge and the back roads to Paint Lick.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lancaster RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Lancaster. Most RVezy hosts welcome trips into neighboring states like Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia, and many allow longer journeys as long as you confirm with them first. Popular routes include Lancaster to the Great Smoky Mountains (about 220 miles south), Mammoth Cave (around 150 miles west), and Red River Gorge (around 75 miles northeast). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and insurance confirmation. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: message your host before booking if you plan to chain states together.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Lancaster RV trip?
Fuel is easy to plan for in Kentucky, where gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers pulled by a half-ton truck average 10 to 14 mpg, and smaller campervans can reach 15 to 18 mpg. Based on recent Kentucky averages, a 300-mile loop from Lancaster to Mammoth Cave and back generally runs about $80 to $130 in fuel for a typical Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's near I-75 around Richmond, fuel is usually cheaper there than at smaller stations along KY-52 or US-27.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lancaster?
Book sooner rather than later, especially for summer weekends and October foliage trips. Kentucky State Parks like Fort Boonesborough use the official Kentucky State Parks reservation system and open bookings up to 12 months in advance, with peak weekends often filling 4 to 6 months out. Private parks like Cummins Ferry RV Resort typically take direct reservations and book 1 to 3 months ahead in peak season. Pro tip: if you're targeting Herrington Lake or a Bourbon Trail-adjacent campground in October, lock in your spot by July, fall color weekends in Central Kentucky sell out quickly.
reservations.parks.ky.gov/What are driving conditions like around Lancaster, KY?
Driving around Lancaster is genuinely pleasant for RVers. US-27 (the main route through town) and KY-52 are wide, well-paved two-lane highways with gentle rolling hills, and traffic is light outside of Lexington commute hours. Watch for narrow stretches on backroads heading toward the Palisades of the Kentucky River and the Dix River, where some bridges have posted weight limits. Summer thunderstorms can pop up in the afternoons, and winter occasionally brings ice from December through February. Pro tip: when heading to Herrington Lake, take KY-34 west out of Lancaster rather than smaller county roads, it's the most RV-friendly route with room to maneuver.

The deposit amount is shown clearly on the listing before you book. Pro tip: do a quick video walk-around with your host at both pickup and drop-off, it documents the RV's condition and is the best way to avoid deposit disputes later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the local insider move for a cheap RV rental Lancaster trip?
Here's the local secret: book a cheap RV rental Lancaster for the second or third week of September. Summer crowds have cleared out, Herrington Lake is still warm enough to swim, the Bourbon Trail distilleries (including Garrard County Distilling Company right in town) are running full tasting schedules, and nightly rates often drop noticeably compared to July. Pair that with a midweek booking at a nearby park and you've got an incredible value. Pro tip: explore the small farm-to-table spots around Paint Lick for dinner, they're easy short drives from any Lancaster-area campground.
