Campgrounds and RV parks near Martin, KY

Water recreation drives most trips. Paintsville Lake offers a marina, ADA-accessible boat launch, and opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, and water skiing, with bass fishing tournaments running throughout the year and trout regularly stocked in the lake. Carr Creek State Park adds a swimming beach, boat rentals, and bass, crappie, and walleye fishing on Carr Fork Lake. Hiking and mountain views anchor the eastern side of the region. Breaks Interstate Park encompasses roughly 4,600 acres in a 5-mile gorge plunging 1,650 feet, with trails, rock climbing, and canyon overlooks. A stacked-loop mountain bike system offers up to nearly 12 miles of riding, from moderate to difficult. Yatesville Lake State Park adds a multi-use trail for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through mid-fall. At Paintsville Lake, peak season runs from April 1 through October 31 with a 2-night minimum stay required on Friday and Saturday nights. The Breaks Interstate Park campground follows a shorter window: the campground is open from April 1 through October 31, with the lodge and day-use areas operating year-round. Weather shapes access more than schedules. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so contact the park directly for available resources when traveling during months conducive to freezing. Fall brings peak color across the Appalachian ridgelines and lower humidity, making September and October the most comfortable stretch for hiking-focused trips. Summer weekends and holiday weeks fill fastest, especially at lakefront state-park sites. Bass tournament weekends, elk-viewing tours in shoulder season, and October leaf-peeping traffic all pull demand well ahead of arrival.

Expect mountain roads and gravel pads. Getting up the mountain can be a challenge if you have a big rig, so be mindful of sharp switchbacks and use lower gears when approaching Breaks Interstate Park. At the Kentucky lakes, sites are typically level gravel with back-in access; many of the campsites at Paintsville Lake can accommodate large RVs up to 48 feet in length. Hookups vary by park. Paintsville Lake has 32 developed sites offering full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections. At Breaks, sites range from primitive to full hookup options with electric, water, and sewer connections available for RVs, spread across four distinct loops. Cell coverage is spotty in the gorges, and coolers, drinks, and food must be secured in an RV, vehicle, or suspended out of reach from bears, with trash taken to bear-proof waste stations. Kentucky State Parks prohibits the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds.
