Camping near McRoberts, Kentucky
McRoberts sits in Letcher County in the coalfields of far eastern Kentucky, close to the Virginia state line and the Pine Mountain ridge. RV travelers use it as a base for two very different park systems: Kentucky State Parks to the west and the bi-state Breaks Interstate Park to the east. Terrain is steep and forested, so campgrounds tend to be small, tucked into hollows, or arranged along lake shorelines and river gorges.
Carr Creek State Park sits along Kentucky Route 15 in Knott County, with a 29-acre park footprint and a 750-acre lake as its main feature. The park is 15 miles southeast of Hazard on KY 15 South. To the east, Breaks Interstate Park spans the Kentucky-Virginia border where the Russell Fork River carved through ancient sandstone formations.
Closer-in private options include Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground, Camp Mountventures, and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park, the last of which is built around ATV and OHV trail access in southwest Virginia.
Things to do around McRoberts
Water recreation anchors the area. The 750-acre lake at Carr Creek supports bass, crappie and walleye fishing, along with pleasure boating along miles of shoreline. Carr Creek State Park also has a full-service marina with a snack bar and boat rental service, plus a 480-foot beach, the longest in the Kentucky park system.
At Breaks Interstate Park, the draw is the gorge itself, plus hiking, overlooks, and seasonal whitewater on the Russell Fork. For motorized recreation, Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park sits at the trailhead for the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon ATV, OHV and mountain bike trail, and offers cabins, full hook-up pull-through RV sites and tent camping options. More than 200 miles of connected trail across 7,900 acres run from that base via the Coal Canyon and Ridgeview trail systems.

The main camping window in this part of the Cumberland Plateau runs spring through fall. The Breaks campground is normally open from the beginning of April to the end of October. Campgrounds A, B and C are available seasonally from spring until fall, while Campground D and the Yurt are available year round. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so late-fall and winter arrivals should confirm hookups before booking.
Summer is peak season for lake use at Carr Creek and for ATV trips out of Southern Gap, and weekends fill first. Fall brings hardwood color across Pine Mountain and cooler nights that suit campfires; cabins tend to book quickly during peak seasons in summer and fall, so advance reservations are strongly recommended.
Winter camping is possible at year-round sites, but expect cold nights, potential snow, and reduced services.
How to book
At Carr Creek State Park, reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system. There is a 1 night minimum stay during the week, and customers arriving on a Friday or Saturday must stay a minimum of two nights.
For Breaks Interstate Park, campground and Southern Gap inventory is now sold through the park's own reservation system on Firefly Reservations. Booking well in advance is advised for peak weekends, and a limited number of walk-up sites may be available on arrival.
Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park is operated by Breaks Interstate Park and uses the same booking platform. Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground and Camp Mountventures are private operators and are booked directly through each property.
What to expect on site
Sites in this region are wooded and uneven. Several reviewers at Breaks emphasize bringing leveling blocks. Trees provide shade throughout most areas, and the absence of site lighting creates genuinely dark conditions after sundown.
Hookups vary by park. All sites at Carr Creek include electric, water, and sewer hookups, accommodating RVs up to 50 feet. At Breaks, 122 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 20 and 62 feet. At Southern Gap, a bathhouse offers showers, a vending area, laundry and restrooms.
Cell coverage is uneven in the hollows. Grocery runs generally mean driving out to Whitesburg, Jenkins, or Hazard on the Kentucky side, or to Grundy on the Virginia side.
