Campgrounds and RV parks near Middletown, KY

Louisville proper is the main draw. Families can plan half-day visits to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the Louisville Zoo, and the Kentucky Science Center. The Ohio River Greenway offers a paved bike and pedestrian route between Jeffersonville and New Albany, with a pedestrian bridge crossing back into Louisville. Outdoor options are close as well. Charlestown State Park features scenic vistas of the Fourteenmile Creek valley and the Ohio River, elevation changes of over 200 feet, rugged hills, deep ravines, and areas of karst topography with large sinkholes. Visitors can reach the remnants of Rose Island, a 1920s amusement park, via park trails. Jefferson Memorial Forest, southwest of Middletown, adds tent camping and a network of forest trails.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. April into early June brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures, though May is typically the wettest month of the year in the Louisville area, averaging around 130 mm of rainfall. September and October usually bring drier air, cooler nights, and stable weather that is well suited to hiking and river activities. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Peak booking pressure hits around the Kentucky Derby in early May, plus summer weekends and holidays; sites at private parks close to downtown often fill weeks in advance for these dates. Winter operations vary. Charlestown State Park offers reduced amenities from November through April, when water is turned off at most sites and full-hookup sites are winterized, though camping remains available at a lower rate. Full amenities return May through October. Several private parks in the area stay open year round with reduced services; confirm directly before arrival. Snow does occur in winter, though accumulation is usually light, averaging around 13 inches per year.

Expect a mix of park styles. Charlestown State Park has campsites set in a forested area near the Ohio River, with AA sites offering water, sewer, and electricity, Class A sites with electricity only, and modern comfort stations with hot showers. The campground sits about two miles from the main park entrance, so plan accordingly on arrival. Private parks near the interstates are more urban in feel. Louisville North Campground operates as a compact RV park in Clarksville, Indiana, with full hookups and interstate access, though spacing can be tight. Brooks RV Park and Campground and Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park cater to larger rigs on the Kentucky side, with paved or gravel pads, full hookups, and quick access to I-64 or I-65. Confirm site length and slide clearance with each park at booking.
