Camping near Midway, Kentucky
Midway sits in Woodford County between Lexington and Frankfort, in the heart of Bluegrass horse country. The town is small, walkable, and surrounded by working thoroughbred farms, which shapes what RV travelers find nearby: a handful of private RV parks, a large horse-park campground, and river-oriented sites within a short drive.
Elkhorn Creek RV Park and Whispering Hills RV Park anchor the immediate area with full-hookup sites geared to travelers touring the Bluegrass region. Kentucky Horse Park sits on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of Kentucky's Bluegrass region and offers daily programs and one of the most comprehensive schedules of equestrian events in the country, and its campground doubles as a base for those events. To the south and west, Kentucky River Campground and RV Park and Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground put travelers on the Kentucky River near lock and dam pools popular for fishing and paddling.
Most visitors use Midway as a base for Lexington attractions, the Bourbon Trail, and Keeneland race meets rather than for backcountry camping.
Things to do around Midway
Kentucky Horse Park hosts daily shows, two equine museums, and year-round competitions on the same grounds as its campground, which makes it a practical stop for families. Downtown Midway itself is a short railroad-town main street with independent restaurants and shops that most rigs can reach by parking on the outskirts and walking in.
The surrounding roads pass working thoroughbred farms, several of which offer scheduled tours. Bourbon distilleries in Woodford, Franklin, and Scott counties are within a short drive, and Keeneland Race Course runs spring and fall meets that draw heavy crowds.
On the water, the Elkhorn Creek corridor is a well-known smallmouth bass fishery, and the Kentucky River near Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground offers flatwater paddling above the lock and dam.

Central Kentucky has four distinct seasons with warm, humid summers and cool winters. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer.
Spring bookings tighten sharply around the Keeneland spring meet in April and Kentucky Derby weekend in early May, when private parks near Lexington often sell out weeks ahead. Summer brings warm, muggy days, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak family travel through Kentucky Horse Park events. Fall is the other high-demand window, with the Keeneland fall meet in October and cooler temperatures pulling travelers into the region.
Winter is the quiet season. Kentucky State Parks have year-round campgrounds, though the agency cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. Snow accumulations are usually light, but ice storms can affect travel.

How to book campgrounds near Midway
Private parks in the area, including Elkhorn Creek RV Park and Whispering Hills RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Availability is tightest around Keeneland race meets, University of Kentucky home football weekends, and major horse shows, so reservations two to three months out are advisable in spring and fall.
Reservations for Kentucky Horse Park Campground can be made at ReserveAmerica.com or by calling Reserve America at 888-459-7275. The maximum reservation window is 12 months in advance to the date, with new inventory made available when the call center opens, and sites fill quickly around major equestrian events.
Kentucky River Campground and RV Park and Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground handle bookings directly. Travelers should confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and check-in hours at the time of booking, since several of these parks have limited after-hours access.
What to expect on the ground
Most RV parks near Midway offer level, grassy or gravel sites with 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer at the majority of pads. Kentucky Horse Park sites have water and 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, and the campground includes two bathhouses, two dump stations, two laundry facilities, tennis and volleyball courts, a playground, and a junior Olympic size swimming pool. Cell coverage across the Bluegrass is generally strong, and grocery, fuel, and dump stations are easy to find along the US-60, US-62, and I-64 corridors.
Roads into Midway proper are narrow with a low railroad underpass near the downtown area, so larger rigs should route in on Leestown Road or Georgetown Road rather than through the town center. River-access campgrounds can involve steep or winding approaches; drivers of long or heavy rigs should confirm the route with the park before arrival. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall.
