Campgrounds near Mount Vernon, Kentucky
Mount Vernon sits in Rockcastle County in southeastern Kentucky, right off Interstate 75 at the edge of the Appalachian foothills. It is the closest town to the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, a country music complex just north of the city, and it serves as a practical staging point for trips into the Daniel Boone National Forest to the east.
RV travelers have several close options. Mt Vernon Renfro Valley RV Park and Music Valley RV Park at Renfro Valley sit within the entertainment complex itself, while Renfro Valley KOA Holiday is about a mile and a half away with a pool, mini golf, and cabin rentals. Red Hill Horse Camp, roughly a half-hour drive east near Livingston, is built around trail access to the national forest. Wildcat Adventures Offroad Park, south of town off I-75 exit 49, pairs RV sites with a large off-road trail network.
Most sites near the interstate handle big rigs with full hookups, while the forest and off-road parks trend more rustic.
Things to do around Mount Vernon
Live music is the main draw. The Renfro Valley Entertainment Center runs country, gospel, and bluegrass shows, and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum sits just down the road. Lake Linville, close to the Renfro Valley campgrounds, is a straightforward stop for fishing and small-boat launching.
Outdoor recreation opens up quickly heading east. Red Hill Horse Camp offers access to more than 100 miles of trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest, with routes toward Windy Gap, White Oak Branch, and Horse Lick Creek.
Off-highway riders head to Wildcat Adventures Offroad Park, a 2,000-acre property with more than 100 miles of marked trails ranging from beginner grades to technical rock and creek sections. The KOA adds on-site extras including a pool, mini golf, hiking trails, and a Kamp K9 dog park.

The Mount Vernon area has a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and cool winters that bring occasional snow. Rainfall is spread through the year, with spring tending to be the wettest season and fall the driest. Most road-trippable weather runs from April through October.
Renfro Valley programs its main season across the warm months, so shoulder-season and holiday-weekend visits often coincide with scheduled shows. Summer weekends around the July 4th holiday and fall festivals draw the heaviest RV traffic to the entertainment complex, and the KOA hosts themed weekends including Halloween events into late fall.
Red Hill Horse Camp operates seasonally, so equestrian trips need to fall inside its riding window. Wildcat Offroad Park stays open year-round, which makes off-season stays possible when show and trail schedules are lighter.
How to book a campsite
The Renfro Valley properties, Mt Vernon Renfro Valley RV Park and Music Valley RV Park at Renfro Valley, take reservations directly through the Renfro Valley organization by phone or website. Renfro Valley KOA Holiday books through the KOA reservation system online or by phone, and its patio sites and deluxe cabins tend to sell out first on show weekends. Weekend stays in the warm months typically carry a two-night minimum.
Red Hill Horse Camp requires reservations for overnight stays and is booked through the camp directly, not through Recreation.gov. Wildcat Adventures Offroad Park recommends calling ahead to reserve full-hookup or primitive sites.
For summer holidays, fall foliage weekends, and any Renfro Valley show date, booking several weeks out is the safer plan.
What to expect on the ground
The Renfro Valley cluster is I-75 convenience camping: paved access, back-in and pull-through sites, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, showers, and free Wi-Fi at the KOA. Expect some highway and event noise on show nights, and a short walk or drive to theaters, restaurants, and the Hall of Fame.
Red Hill Horse Camp is more rustic and built for equestrian use, with hookup sites and a backcountry feel. A negative Coggins test is required to bring horses into Kentucky.
Wildcat Adventures Offroad Park is loud, dusty, and centered on ATV, UTV, and dirt-bike culture, with full-hookup RV sites plus primitive camping, cabins, and a camp store. Families come for the trails; light sleepers should pick a site away from the staging area.

Fuel is one of the more predictable costs. Kentucky gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often $2.80 to $3.30 per gallon at Pilot, Love's, and Flying J truck stops along I-75. Plan on 8 to 10 MPG for a Class C, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 18 MPG for a Class B campervan or a truck towing a travel trailer. A weekend at the Renfro Valley KOA with a 300-mile round trip usually runs $80 to $130 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. Pro tip: the Pilot just off Exit 62 in Mount Vernon has long pull-through diesel lanes perfect for big rigs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mount Vernon?
For the best campgrounds near Mount Vernon, aim 4 to 8 weeks ahead for summer weekends and Renfro Valley concert nights, and 2 to 3 months ahead for October foliage weekends. Privately run parks like Renfro Valley KOA and Music Valley RV Park book through their own websites or Campspot. State park campgrounds (Cumberland Falls, Levi Jackson) reserve through reservations.ky.gov, and Daniel Boone National Forest sites like Twin Knobs use Recreation.gov, with bookings opening 6 months in advance. Pro tip: weekdays often have walk-up availability even in peak season, perfect for a spontaneous family RV trip Mount Vernon adventure.
recreation.gov/gateways/1042What are the local driving conditions like around Mount Vernon?
Driving an RV around Mount Vernon is refreshingly straightforward. I-75 runs right through town with gentle Appalachian-foothill grades (nothing like mountain pass driving out west), and US-25 and KY-150 are well-maintained two-lane roads. Watch for two specific things: deer crossings at dawn and dusk on rural roads, and the occasional steep, narrow road if you venture deep into Daniel Boone National Forest toward spots like the Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve. Summer thunderstorms can roll through fast, so check the radar before pulling out. Winter ice is rare but possible from December to February. Stick to numbered highways with a larger rig and you'll be golden.

Here's something most first-time visitors miss: Mount Vernon bills itself as "Kentucky's Country Music Capital," and the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center has been hosting live barn-dance and country shows since 1939, with the New Barn Theatre putting you within 30 feet of national-touring artists for a fraction of arena prices. Pair an evening show with a daytime visit to the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame & Museum (2590 Richmond Street, open 7 days a week) where inductees range from Loretta Lynn to the Backstreet Boys. Stay at Music Valley RV Park on the same property, walk to the show, walk back to your RV. That's a uniquely Mount Vernon RV trip you can't replicate anywhere else.
