Campgrounds and RV parks near New Castle, KY

General Butler State Resort Park is the main outdoor hub in the area. The park offers more than five miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus fishing and paddle-boating on 30-acre Butler Lake. Fall color draws visitors in October, when the hardwoods along the lake reach peak foliage. Motorsports fans stay close to the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, a short drive from Sparta Campground. Families camping at Adventure Bound Eagle Valley have on-site access to a swimming pool and water slides, and the park is within day-trip reach of the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum, each roughly 45 to 50 minutes away. The Ohio and Kentucky Rivers offer boating and paddling near Carrollton, and Louisville attractions such as Churchill Downs and the Louisville Slugger Museum are reachable as a day trip via I-71.

Peak camping season in the New Castle area runs from late April through mid-October, with the busiest weekends tied to Memorial Day, July Fourth, Labor Day, and Kentucky Speedway race dates. Summer brings hot, humid conditions and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so sites with shade and 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. October foliage draws visitors when the hardwoods along the lake reach peak color, and reservations at General Butler tighten well ahead of leaf-peeping weekends. March and April can be wet, and low-lying river sites occasionally see high water during spring rains. Winter camping is limited but possible at General Butler, which stays open year-round. Winter stays are quieter, with heated bathhouses still available, though Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water availability at campgrounds during freezing months and recommend contacting the park directly. Most private parks in the area close or reduce services from late fall through early spring.

Sites in the area lean toward paved or gravel pads with electric and water, and full hookups at select loops. General Butler State Resort Park offers camping facilities for tent and RV campers, with electric and water hookups for RVs, a central service building with restrooms and showers, and primitive sites for a more rustic experience. The campground has a mix of back-in and pull-through sites, each typically with a fire ring and picnic table, and a dump station is available for RVs. Site quality varies. Some pads are narrow, and a few have a significant grade drop from the blacktop to the grass, which can create leveling challenges for larger rigs. At some private parks, cell service and Wi-Fi can be limited, so download maps and reservations before arrival.
