Campgrounds near Nicholasville
Nicholasville sits in Jessamine County in central Kentucky's Bluegrass region, just south of Lexington and within a short drive of the Kentucky River Palisades, the state's horse country, and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want to combine outdoor time with distillery tours, horse-farm visits, and pioneer history.
Most campgrounds within an hour of Nicholasville fall into two groups. Riverside private parks along the Kentucky River, such as Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground and Camp on the Kentucky, offer full or partial hookups, boat access, and quieter settings. State-run and attraction-based campgrounds, including Kentucky Horse Park and Fort Boonesborough State Park, provide larger site counts, paved pads, and family amenities such as pools and playgrounds.
Smaller options such as Pioneer Playhouse RV campground in Danville round out the mix. The area works well for weekend trips out of Lexington or as a mid-route stop on a longer Kentucky itinerary.
Things to do near Nicholasville
The Kentucky River Palisades dominate outdoor recreation in the area, with limestone cliffs framing paddling, fishing, and hiking routes. Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground sits directly on the river with boat access, while Camp on the Kentucky provides a boat ramp for anglers and paddlers.
Horse country is the other main draw. Kentucky Horse Park operates a working equine theme park with museums, breed demonstrations, and daily programs, and its campground connects to the Legacy Trail, a 12-mile paved walking and biking route that runs into downtown Lexington. Fort Boonesborough State Park adds a reconstructed 1775 frontier fort, the Kentucky River Museum, and a supervised swimming pool.
Distillery tours along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, and historic downtown Danville near Pioneer Playhouse RV campground are all within easy driving range.

Central Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate with four clear seasons. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. October brings fall color across the Bluegrass hills and is a popular booking month, especially at Kentucky Horse Park and Fort Boonesborough State Park.
Summer is peak season. Temperatures often climb into the mid 80s with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Pools at Kentucky Horse Park and Fort Boonesborough run seasonally, and Pioneer Playhouse in Danville stages its outdoor summer theater from June through August, which drives demand at its campground.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Kentucky State Parks note that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during freezing months. At Fort Boonesborough, on-site water is turned off in winter while restrooms and a fill-up point remain open. Kentucky Horse Park keeps only its B and D loops open from early November through mid-March, and site water is shut off during that stretch.
