Campgrounds and RV parks near North Middletown, KY

History drives most itineraries in this part of Kentucky. Fort Boonesborough State Park features a full-scale reconstructed 1770s fort with resident artisans, a Kentucky River Museum, a swimming pool, mini-golf, a boat ramp, and hiking trails. Blue Licks Battlefield preserves the site of the last Revolutionary War battle fought in Kentucky and includes a Pioneer Museum, the Buffalo Trace trail, and the River Trail along the Licking River. Equestrian visitors head straight to Kentucky Horse Park, an equine theme park set on more than 1,200 acres with daily programs, the International Museum of the Horse, and access to the paved Legacy Trail linking the campground with downtown Lexington. Families can also fish or paddle the Kentucky and Licking rivers, tour Bourbon Trail distilleries in Bourbon and Woodford counties, and reach the Red River Gorge for hiking within about ninety minutes.

Central Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable RV weather, with daytime highs generally in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit and cool nights. May is typically the wettest month, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from late spring through summer. Fall foliage generally peaks in mid to late October. Summers are warm and humid, with highs frequently in the mid 80s Fahrenheit and the occasional 90-degree stretch. This is peak camping season at Kentucky Horse Park and Fort Boonesborough, and weekends fill early, especially around horse show events and holidays. Winters are cold but not extreme. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee site water during months when freezing temperatures are possible, though restrooms and central water fill-ups typically remain available. Blue Licks Battlefield operates on a seasonal schedule, with the campground open through mid-November and direct water hookups shut off from late October through mid-March. Kentucky Horse Park keeps water off at sites from mid-November through mid-March.

Sites in the area lean toward paved or gravel pads with electric and water service and access to a central dump station. Fort Boonesborough operates around 166 sites, of which 18 are full hookup, plus three dump stations, a camp store, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Kentucky Horse Park has 260 paved back-in sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service and water, two bathhouses, two dump stations, and a swimming pool. Blue Licks Battlefield is smaller, with roughly 49 electric and water sites plus a few primitive tent sites, and back-in maximum lengths that vary by site, so measure your rig before booking. Extension cords and extra water hose length up to fifty feet are worth packing for state park sites. Kentucky prohibits bringing firewood in from outside the state due to Emerald Ash Borer restrictions. Firewood is sold at each state park campground. Pets are welcome at state park campgrounds on leash.
