Fishing and paddling drive most trips. Lake Malone is well known for fishing, and the lake is stocked with large mouth bass, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. The state park also has a boat ramp, camping, beach, picnicking, and playgrounds, which makes it a straightforward day trip for families. Hikers can work the shoreline area at Lake Malone, where the forest is thick with hardwood trees, holly, mountain laurel and tall pines, and steep sandstone bluffs rise above the water's edge. West of Nortonville, Land Between the Lakes offers wildlife viewing, elk and bison prairie, a living history farm, and a planetarium. Smaller day trips include the Pennyrile Forest area for hiking and Hopkinsville and Madisonville for groceries, laundromats, and propane refills.

Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows around Nortonville. Days run warm without the peak humidity of midsummer, and the hardwoods around Lake Malone turn color from mid-October into early November. Bug pressure is lower in these shoulder months, and weekends at the state park campground are easier to book than in July. Summer is peak season. Heat and humidity build through June, July, and August, and lake-adjacent sites at Lake Malone State Park Campground and Gregory Lake RV Park fill quickly on holiday weekends. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so RV travelers should plan for awning-down conditions and check radar before towing. Winter camping is possible for self-contained rigs at the private parks, but conditions change at the state facility. Due to weather, Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly for available resources if traveling during months conducive to freezing temperatures.
