Campgrounds and RV parks near Plantation, KY

Louisville anchors the trip list. Families can plan around Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the Louisville Zoo, the Kentucky Science Center, and the Muhammad Ali Center. The Louisville Mega Cavern and the waterfront parks along the Ohio River are easy half-day stops. On the Indiana side, Falls of the Ohio State Park protects one of the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world and pairs well with a walk across the Big Four pedestrian bridge. Charlestown State Park offers over 15 miles of trails ranging from easy to rugged, with wildflowers, fossil outcroppings, and areas of karst topography that include large sinkholes. Day-trip options include the Bourbon Trail distilleries southeast of the city and Mammoth Cave National Park about ninety minutes south.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Louisville. The best periods are from mid-April to mid-May and from mid-September to mid-October, with autumn generally drier and with less temperature variation, while spring offers longer days. Derby-related events in early May fill nearby campgrounds well in advance. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. It remains the busiest booking season because school is out and Louisville hosts a heavy events calendar, so reserving in advance is important. Shaded loops at Charlestown State Park book fastest. Winter is cold and damp, with occasional snow and freezing nights from December through February. Louisville has occasional winter days that never warm above 32 degrees F, and the city averages about 13 days a year below freezing. Some private RV parks near Louisville stay open year-round for travelers with four-season rigs, while state-park camping is quieter and some services are reduced. Freezing overnight temperatures can affect water hookups, so winterizing precautions are advised.

Private RV parks in the Louisville area are set up primarily for travelers rather than long stays in nature. Louisville North Campground, for example, sits on a gravel lot near I-65 with paved pull-through sites, full hookups, a pool, laundry, and a small store, though freight trains run in the vicinity and site spacing can be tight for larger rigs. Charlestown State Park is a different experience: wooded sites, modern comfort stations, and quiet loops surrounded by forest. Cell service can be limited inside the park, and the park is large, so driving distances to trailheads and amenities can add up. Traffic around Louisville during Derby week, major conventions, and University of Louisville football weekends can slow arrivals significantly, so plan check-in times accordingly.
