Campgrounds and RV parks near Prospect, KY

Charlestown State Park offers over 15 miles of trails through rugged hills and deep ravines, with views of Fourteenmile Creek and the Ohio River. Hikers pass Devonian fossil outcrops, karst sinkholes, and remnants of a 1920s-era amusement park. Birders can watch for more than 70 species, including bluebirds, black vultures, and the occasional bald eagle. Deam Lake State Recreation Area serves as a trailhead for the Knobstone Trail, Indiana's longest hiking trail, and connects to roughly 80 miles of multipurpose trails in the adjacent Clark State Forest. The lake allows electric-motor boating, kayaking, and fishing. From the Prospect area, downtown Louisville attractions such as Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum, and the Louisville Zoo are all reachable within a short drive.

The Louisville area has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year, with May typically the rainiest month and thunderstorms common. Wildflowers, dogwoods, and redbuds peak from April into early May, making shoulder-season camping popular but muddy after storms. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging near 88°F and uncomfortable humidity from July into August. Weekend sites at state parks and private RV parks fill quickly, especially around Kentucky Derby weekend in early May, Thunder Over Louisville in April, and the Kentucky State Fair in August. Fall is generally drier and more stable, with cooler nights and color peaking in mid to late October. Winters are mild but variable: Louisville averages roughly 13 days below freezing per year, and light snow is possible from December through March. Charlestown State Park's campground stays open year-round, while Deam Lake's family and horse campgrounds close from the Sunday before Thanksgiving until March 1.

Louisville North Campground is a compact urban RV park on a gravel lot in Clarksville, with full hookups, paved pull-throughs accommodating large rigs, a pool, laundry, and an on-site convenience store. Sites are close together and freight trains pass on nearby tracks throughout the night, so light sleepers should pack accordingly. Charlestown State Park offers a quieter, forested experience with full-hookup and electric-only loops, modern comfort stations, a dump station, and generally strong cell service. Only one vehicle is permitted per campsite, with overflow parking provided. Check-in and check-out is 2 p.m., except Sundays and holidays when both shift to 5 p.m. At Deam Lake, the equestrian loop requires at least one horse to be present on site; RV campers without horses should book the family campground instead.
