Campgrounds and RV parks near Saint Matthews, KY

Downtown Louisville is the main draw. Churchill Downs, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Kentucky Science Center, and the Louisville Zoo are all within a short drive of Saint Matthews, and campgrounds in Clarksville put visitors within a few miles of these attractions. Kentucky Kingdom amusement and water park and the Big Four pedestrian bridge across the Ohio River add family-friendly options. On the Indiana side, Charlestown State Park offers over 15 miles of trails ranging from easy to rugged, with fossil outcroppings, karst sinkholes, and the Portersville Bridge leading to the ruins of the 1920s-era Rose Island amusement park. Birders can spot more than 70 species, including bluebirds, black vultures, and occasional bald eagles. Falls of the Ohio State Park and the Ohio River Greenway bike path add fossil viewing and a paved multi-use route between Jeffersonville and New Albany.

The Louisville area has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are generally the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures and lower humidity. Mid-April through mid-May and mid-September through mid-October tend to be the sweet spots for touring the city and hiking area trails. Summer brings hot, humid weather with average July highs near 88°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. May is typically the wettest month, with spring storms common through the region. Kentucky Derby week in early May is the single busiest period for Louisville-area campgrounds, and nearby RV parks fill months in advance around that event. Winters are moderately cold, with January the coldest month and occasional days that stay below freezing. Louisville averages roughly 13 days a year that remain below 32°F. Private RV parks around Louisville typically operate year-round, though shoulder-season and winter stays should be planned around cold-weather utility limits at some sites.

Private RV parks near Saint Matthews trade scenery for location. Louisville North Campground sits on a gravel lot in Clarksville with sites arranged close together, full hookups, laundry facilities, and a swimming pool. Active railroad tracks run near the property, so light sleepers should plan for train noise at night. Sites at urban parks are tight, and big rigs should confirm site length and maneuvering room when booking. Charlestown State Park offers a different setting: sites in a forested park with full-hookup and electric-only loops, modern comfort stations with hot showers, a dump station, and a boat ramp on the Ohio River. Cell service is generally reliable across the metro area and at Charlestown. Firewood brought in from outside the state is restricted at state parks to help prevent the spread of invasive pests.
