Campgrounds near Science Hill, Kentucky
Science Hill sits in Pulaski County in south-central Kentucky, a short drive north of Somerset and the sprawling Lake Cumberland reservoir. The town works well as a jumping-off point for RV travelers because it puts campgrounds on the lake, the Cumberland River, and the edge of Daniel Boone National Forest all within easy reach.
Lake Cumberland is the region's main draw. It is a large impoundment held back by Wolf Creek Dam on the Cumberland River, with more than 50,000 acres of surface water and over 1,200 miles of shoreline. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates several developed campgrounds, and it is also ringed by Kentucky state park and private RV park facilities.
Options close to Science Hill include Happy Camper RV Park Lake Cumberland, Off The Hook RV Campground, General Burnside Island State Park Campground on Kentucky's only island state park, Cumberland Cove Campground in Burnside, and Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort on the lake's main body. Together they cover a range from full-hookup private parks to Corps and state-park sites.
Things to do near Science Hill
Lake Cumberland drives most trip plans. Boating, houseboat rentals, water skiing, tubing, and swimming are standard summer activities, and the lake holds largemouth, smallmouth, white and Kentucky bass, bluegill, crappie, rockfish, and walleye, so anglers have plenty to target. Marinas near General Burnside Island and along the northern shoreline handle fuel, launches, and supplies.
On land, Daniel Boone National Forest wraps much of the area with hiking, mountain biking, and horseback trails. Day trips from a base near Science Hill can reach Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, known for its large waterfall and moonbow, and Mill Springs Battlefield, a Civil War site about twenty minutes from Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort. Golfers can play the eighteen-hole course at General Burnside Island State Park.

The Lake Cumberland camping season generally runs from April through October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Water temperatures climb into the mid-80s Fahrenheit in July and August, which is when houseboat traffic, marina activity, and lakefront sites are busiest. Reservations for waterfront Corps sites fill quickly during this window.
Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and higher rainfall, along with rising lake levels toward summer pool. Storms and occasional tornado watches are possible from March into May, so RV travelers should keep an eye on regional forecasts. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Cumberland Plateau, though some Corps campgrounds close by mid-September.
Winter is quiet. Most Corps and state-park campgrounds around Lake Cumberland close for the season, and Kentucky State Parks notes that water and other services cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during months when freezing temperatures are possible. Snow is possible but usually light in Pulaski County.
How to book campgrounds near Science Hill
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Cumberland, including Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort, are booked through Recreation.gov. Cumberland Point operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-September, and the maximum stay is fourteen days within any thirty consecutive-day period. Waterfront sites go first, so book early for summer weekends.
General Burnside Island State Park Campground is reserved through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to twelve months in advance, with a two-night minimum on peak-season weekends. Private parks such as Happy Camper RV Park Lake Cumberland, Off The Hook RV Campground, and Cumberland Cove Campground are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Sites around Lake Cumberland range from full-hookup pads at private parks to electric-and-water Corps sites and a mix of hookup and primitive spots at the state park. General Burnside Island State Park Campground offers ninety-four utility sites with two central service buildings featuring showers and restrooms, plus a dump station. Cumberland Point has thirty shaded sites with electric and water, flush restrooms, hot showers, drinking water, a dump station, and a boat ramp.
Terrain matters for larger rigs. The entrance and exit roads at Cumberland Point have a moderate to severe grade, and the campground is not suitable for larger RVs. Cell coverage is patchy in coves and hollows, so download maps in advance. Kentucky prohibits importing firewood from outside the state; buy it locally at the campground or a nearby vendor.
