Campgrounds and RV parks near Shively, KY

Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum, and the Louisville Slugger Museum are all a short drive from Shively, and most RV parks in the area position themselves for easy access to these attractions. Louisville North Campground sits close to downtown Louisville and near Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville, where fossil beds and river views draw families. Bourbon distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail begin within a short drive south and east. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, near Clermont, offers hiking, a canopy tree walk, and picnic areas. The Ohio River waterfront in downtown Louisville has parks, playgrounds, and the Big Four pedestrian bridge, all within reach for a day trip from any nearby campground.

Louisville has a climate with four distinct seasons and warm, humid summers. Spring runs cool to warm and includes the wettest stretch of the year, with May typically the rainiest month and thunderstorms frequent. This is also Derby season, and campgrounds across the metro book out weeks or months in advance for the first Saturday in May. Summer is hot and humid, with July averaging highs near 89°F and afternoon thunderstorms common. Pools open at parks like Louisville South KOA Holiday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and event weekends including Independence Day and the Kentucky State Fair in August drive strong demand. Fall is generally the most comfortable travel window, with drier air, cooler nights, and reliable foliage color from mid-October into early November. Winter is cold but not extreme. Snow accumulates only lightly, averaging around 13 inches for the season, and most private parks in the area remain open year-round. Expect quieter grounds, reduced activity programming, and occasional freeze warnings that can affect water hookups.

Most parks near Shively are functional, interstate-adjacent RV parks rather than scenic wilderness campgrounds. Sites are typically level with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Louisville North Campground offers paved pull-throughs able to handle rigs up to about 70 feet, along with a pool, laundry, general store, and propane, but sits close to active rail lines, so overnight train noise is common. Louisville South KOA Holiday has 90-foot pull-through sites, a seasonal pool, hiking trails on-site, a fishing pond, and family activity programming on summer weekends. Expect a mix of overnight travelers and longer-term guests at most metro-Louisville parks, closer site spacing than at state or federal campgrounds, and easy access to groceries, fuel, and dump stations.
