Campgrounds and RV parks near Somerset, KY

Water is the main attraction. Lake Cumberland supports boating, houseboating, waterskiing, swimming, and fishing for largemouth, smallmouth, and Kentucky bass, plus bluegill, crappie, striped bass, and walleye. Marinas near Somerset rent pontoons and houseboats, and public boat ramps are available at General Burnside Island State Park Campground and Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort. On land, the Daniel Boone National Forest lies just south of town with hiking to features like Natural Arch and Yahoo Falls, the tallest waterfall in Kentucky. General Burnside Island State Park has an 18-hole golf course on the island itself. Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument, a Civil War site with interpretive exhibits and a driving tour, is a short drive from the lake's western campgrounds.

The core Lake Cumberland camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. General Burnside Island State Park Campground operates from roughly mid-March through mid-November, and Corps of Engineers sites such as Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort typically open in mid-May and close in mid-September. Private parks around Somerset, including options like Happy Camper RV Park Lake Cumberland and Cumberland Cove Campground, tend to stay open year-round, though water service can be limited during freezing weather. Summer is peak season, with warm water temperatures and the busiest boat traffic. Spring brings wildflowers, mild temperatures, and lower occupancy, and is a good window for hiking and fishing before crowds arrive. Fall offers cooler nights, changing hardwoods, and lighter traffic through October. Kentucky State Parks note that during freezing months they cannot guarantee availability of water at campgrounds, so winter visitors should confirm hookups directly with the park.

Most RV sites around Somerset are back-in gravel pads set among mature hardwoods, with shade a consistent feature at both public and private parks. Corps of Engineers campgrounds typically offer water and electric hookups with a central dump station rather than sewer at each site, while state parks and many private parks such as Cumberland Cove Campground provide full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service. Rig length matters at Corps sites. Cumberland Point Campground and RV Resort has site-specific length limits and some approach grades, so verify the maximum RV length on the individual site listing before booking. Cell service is generally usable in and around Somerset but can drop off in the coves and forested loops. Campgrounds are pet-friendly as a rule, and firewood brought from outside Kentucky is prohibited at state parks.
