Campgrounds near Springfield, Kentucky
Springfield sits in Washington County in the rolling bluegrass country of central Kentucky, roughly an hour southeast of Louisville and about the same distance southwest of Lexington. The town is small, so most RV camping is spread across a short drive: north toward Bardstown, west toward the Bourbon Trail distilleries, and northwest toward Taylorsville Lake. The area works as a practical base for combining outdoor time with distillery visits, Civil War and Lincoln history sites, and Kentucky Derby-country day trips.
The closest campgrounds cluster around Bardstown and along KY-55. My Old Kentucky Home State Park sits on the grounds of Federal Hill in Bardstown and offers standard water and electric hookup sites with a handful of full-hookup pads. Little Patch of Heaven is a smaller private option a few miles from downtown Bardstown. For lake access, Taylorsville Lake State Park and Taylorsville Campground RV Park and Boat Storage put visitors within reach of boat ramps.
Heartland RV Park rounds out the options with a straightforward hookup-focused stay. Sites in the area range from paved pull-throughs suitable for larger fifth wheels to primitive tent pads.
Things to do around Springfield
Water recreation centers on Taylorsville Lake, a 3,050-acre reservoir known for bass, bluegill, and crappie, with four launch ramps and a marina renting fishing boats and pontoons. The park's 16-mile trail system is managed as multi-use, open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, and ten sites at the state park campground are set aside for equestrian use.
History and bourbon fill most day trips. Federal Hill, the mansion at the heart of My Old Kentucky Home State Park, offers guided tours and is the inspiration for Kentucky's state song. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail runs through neighboring counties, and the area sits within an hour of most major distilleries. Downtown Bardstown, about fifteen miles north of Springfield, adds walkable dining, shops, and the Civil War Museum.

Central Kentucky has four distinct seasons. Spring brings the heaviest rainfall, with May typically the wettest month. Wildflowers and greening woods make April and May prime for hiking and lakeside stays, though campers should expect muddy trails after storms and occasional severe weather watches.
Summer is warm, humid, and busy. Weekends at Taylorsville Lake State Park and My Old Kentucky Home fill early, and reservations should be locked in weeks ahead for holiday periods. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall is the most comfortable stretch: cooler nights, lower humidity, and fewer bugs make September through mid-November the sweet spot for RV travel, though bourbon-festival weekends in Bardstown can tighten availability.
Winter is cold and wet. Kentucky State Parks notes that water and other resources at their campgrounds cannot be guaranteed during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the specific park before booking a cold-weather stay. Taylorsville Lake State Park's campground typically operates from spring into mid-December, while private parks such as Little Patch of Heaven stay open year round.
How to book campgrounds near Springfield
Kentucky State Park campgrounds, including My Old Kentucky Home State Park and Taylorsville Lake State Park, book through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to twelve months in advance, so popular summer weekends open a full year out.
Private campgrounds such as Little Patch of Heaven, Taylorsville Campground RV Park and Boat Storage, and Heartland RV Park handle bookings directly by phone or through their own websites. Same-day and walk-up availability is more common midweek and outside peak summer.
For larger RVs, confirm site length and hookup type before arrival, as some state park sites listed as pull-through vary in usable length. Kentucky State Park sites are capped at a maximum of eight occupants, with four adults and children sixteen and under included in the base rate.
What to expect on the ground
State park campgrounds in the area are wooded and generally quiet, with paved or gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Taylorsville Lake State Park has a central service building with restrooms, showers, and laundry, plus an RV dump station. My Old Kentucky Home offers 39 utility-hookup sites (five with full hookups), a central bathhouse, and a dump station, with a grocery store and laundry across the street in Bardstown.
Hookup poles at My Old Kentucky Home can sit well back from some pads, so a long water hose and extra electrical cord are worth packing. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be spotty in the wooded loops closer to the lake. Expect thick summer humidity, ticks and mosquitoes in the warm months, and the occasional deer or wild turkey wandering through the sites at dawn.
