Campgrounds near Stanton, Kentucky
Stanton sits in Powell County at the western edge of the Red River Gorge Geological Area, roughly a mile off the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway. The town works as a supply stop and staging point for RV travelers heading into the Gorge, the Daniel Boone National Forest, and Natural Bridge State Resort Park just to the southeast near Slade.
Camping options range from full-hookup private RV parks to state-park sites and rustic retreat properties. 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge and Ryders Ranch Campground cater to RV travelers looking for hookups close to trailheads. Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground and Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center offer alternatives with cabins and group-friendly facilities.
For a state-park experience, Whittleton at Natural Bridge State Resort Park sits inside the park boundary with wooded sites, showers, and access to 22 miles of trails. The park is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest and adjacent to the Red River Gorge, giving campers a single base for hiking, climbing, and paddling.
Things to do near Stanton
The main draw is hiking. Natural Bridge itself is a 78-foot sandstone arch reachable on foot or by sky lift, and the surrounding park has 22 miles of trails on 2,200 wooded acres, ranging from short loops to ridge routes. Red River Gorge adds hundreds of additional trail miles, dozens of natural arches, and some of the best sport climbing in the eastern United States.
Water activities include fishing and non-motorized boating on the 60-acre Mill Creek Lake inside the state park (no gasoline engines allowed), plus canoeing and kayaking on the Red River, which includes a Kentucky Wild River segment. Families often combine trail time with the sky lift, Hoedown Island square dancing on summer weekends, and short scenic drives through the Gorge.

Spring and fall are the busy seasons. Wildflowers peak in April and May, and October brings heavy weekend traffic for fall color, with sites at popular campgrounds booking out weeks ahead. Kentucky State Parks require a two-night minimum on peak-season weekends, so short overnight stops are difficult on Fridays and Saturdays.
Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. The state-park pool, tavern, and restaurant operate in the summer months. At Koomer Ridge, the Forest Service campground in the Gorge, flush toilets, showers, and drinking water run April 1 through October 31, while accessible vault toilets stay open year-round. Whittleton typically operates from March through October.
Winter is quiet. Kentucky State Parks warn that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed during months with freezing temperatures, and campers traveling in the colder months should contact the park before arrival. Most private campgrounds also reduce services in winter.
How to book a campsite
Kentucky State Park campgrounds, including Whittleton at Natural Bridge, are reserved through ReserveAmerica. The booking window opens up to 12 months in advance, and reservations must be made at least two days ahead of arrival. Peak-season weekends require a two-night minimum, and holiday periods often require longer stays.
Koomer Ridge, the only developed Forest Service campground in the Gorge, is reservable on Recreation.gov, with unreserved sites offered first-come, first-served. Backcountry and dispersed camping in the Red River Gorge Geological Area does not require a site reservation, but every vehicle parked overnight on national forest land must display a Daniel Boone National Forest recreation permit for backcountry camping between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., sold at the Gladie Visitor Center and local vendors.
Private options such as 4 Guys RV Park at the Gorge, Natural Bridge Cabin Company Campground, and Ryders Ranch Campground book directly through the operator, and popular weekends fill early.
What to expect
Sites in the Gorge area sit under mature hardwood cover on hilly terrain. RV travelers should confirm site length and hookups at booking, since some state-park and Forest Service loops have short pads and tight turns; Whittleton in particular has a narrow layout better suited to rigs under about 30 feet. Cell coverage is spotty once off the parkway, so download maps and reservation confirmations in advance.
Kentucky State Parks prohibit bringing firewood in from other states to slow the spread of Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is sold on site at state park campgrounds. Golf carts require a paid permit at Kentucky state park campgrounds.
Natural Bridge State Resort Park and the surrounding national forest operate under different rule sets: the state park prohibits rock climbing, off-trail travel, and pets on most hiking trails, while the national forest allows climbing, dispersed camping, and leashed pets. Check posted rules at each campground before heading out.
