Campgrounds near Stearns, Kentucky
Stearns sits at the edge of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, a roughly 125,000-acre unit of the National Park Service that spans the Kentucky-Tennessee border on the Cumberland Plateau. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the park's Kentucky District, with rugged river gorges, sandstone bluffs, and historic mining sites nearby.
The closest developed campground is Blue Heron - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area, located in the Kentucky portion of Big South Fork about 9 miles west of Stearns off Highway 742, with 45 sites offering water and electric hook-ups, picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Horse campers can use Bear Creek Horse Camp - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area and Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA inside the same recreation area, both suited to trailer rigs with stock.
Cumberland Falls State Park lies a short drive northeast and adds two developed loops, Cumberland Falls State Park - Main and Cumberland Falls State Park - Cliffy, on the Cumberland River. Between the National Park Service and Kentucky State Parks systems, RV travelers have access to both hookup sites and more primitive options within an hour of town.
Things to do near Stearns
Big South Fork is built for outdoor recreation. Numerous trails snake through the Recreation Area, offering mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding, and the main river is a short drive away, offering fishing opportunities. The Blue Heron mining community interpretive site, reached via the Big South Fork Scenic Railway out of Stearns, is a popular half-day stop for families.
At Cumberland Falls State Park, the 68-foot-tall Cumberland Falls is the headline attraction. It is one of the few places in the Western Hemisphere where a moonbow, or lunar rainbow, can be seen on nights with a full moon. The state park also has 17 miles of hiking trails, guided whitewater rafting and horseback rides, a swimming pool, and fishing, with the Moonbow Trail connecting into the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Both major park systems near Stearns run on a partial-season schedule for camping. Blue Heron Campground is open from April through November and operates on a reservation system from April 1 through November 30. The campground at Cumberland Falls is closed for the 2026 season to complete upgrades, so RV travelers should confirm status directly with Kentucky State Parks before planning a stay there.
Summer draws the heaviest visitation. Hot, humid weather and school-break travel push campgrounds toward capacity on weekends and holidays, and Cumberland Falls in particular sees crowds around each full moon for the moonbow. Spring brings wildflowers and higher river flows for paddlers, along with frequent rain. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights and hardwood color across the plateau.
Winter is quiet. Developed loops at Big South Fork are closed, though day-use access to trails, overlooks, and the falls continues. RV travelers who visit in the cold months should plan for limited services and confirm which park facilities are operating before arrival.
How to book a site near Stearns
Campgrounds inside Big South Fork are reserved through the federal system. Reservations for sites within Big South Fork can be made through the National Recreation Reservation Service by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online at Recreation.gov, and may be made up to 180 days in advance. Bear Creek Horse Camp - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area and Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA use the same portal during their open season.
Cumberland Falls State Park uses the Kentucky State Parks reservation portal on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. Popular weekends around moonbow dates and summer holidays fill early, so booking well ahead is prudent for larger RVs and full-hookup sites, and travelers should verify current-season openings before booking.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain is steep and forested. Big South Fork sits in some of the most rugged terrain of the Cumberland Plateau, encompassing approximately 125,000 acres of rocky gorges and forested plateaus, with numerous streams uniting with the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Access roads are paved but winding, so drivers of longer rigs should check site-length listings before booking.
Blue Heron offers modern comfort in a rustic setting. The campground combines traditional woods camping with flush toilets, hot showers, and electric hookups, sites accommodate both RV and tent camping, and campsites are spacious with picnic areas and shade. Cell service is limited across the plateau.
Bears are active in the area. Black bears reside within Big South Fork, and campers at Blue Heron should use proper food storage techniques. Bear-resistant lockers are provided at the campground.

Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C, 6 to 8 for a Class A, and 12 to 18 for a campervan or truck pulling a small trailer. A 300-mile loop around Cumberland Falls, Yahoo Falls, and Blue Heron will run about $80 to $130 in fuel for most rigs. recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232505What are driving conditions like in and around Stearns?
Driving around Stearns is pleasant once you know what to expect. The Cumberland Plateau means winding two-lane roads with rolling hills, occasional steep grades, and stretches with no shoulder, so take it slow and use lower gears on long descents toward the Big South Fork gorge. US-27 is the main north-south artery and is well-maintained and comfortable for any RV size. Avoid narrow forest service roads with a large rig unless your host confirms the route. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, fog in the gorges on cool mornings, and occasional truck traffic on KY-92. Winter brings rare snow but possible black ice. Local tip: cell service is spotty inside Big South Fork, download offline maps before heading in.

Blue Heron has a dump station, the most convenient place to empty tanks before heading home. Freshwater fill is available on site. There are no full sewer hookups inside Big South Fork campgrounds, so plan dump stops accordingly. Bear-aware food storage is required, this is active black bear country. Many motorhome rentals in Stearns also include a built-in generator or solar setup, perfect for off-grid stays at Alum Ford. WiFi is rare since Big South Fork has limited signal, but most rigs have a TV and Bluetooth speakers for evenings around the fire. Bedding, towels, and kitchen kits vary by host, check the listing's amenities tab or message to confirm. Campervan rentals in Stearns are also great for solo travelers and couples.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stearns%2C%20KentuckyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons in Stearns include generators, camp chair and table sets, bike racks, kayak racks, kitchen kits, linen packages, and pet cleaning fees if you're traveling with a dog. Many hosts offer delivery to Blue Heron, Bandy Creek, or Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, which is a lifesaver for first-timers. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Stearns, Whitley City, or Somerset, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary, look for unlimited-mileage rigs if you're planning a family RV trip from Stearns that loops through Tennessee. Pro tip: ask about a late return, hosts are often flexible on Sunday afternoons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stearns%2C%20KentuckyHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, never directly to the host, which keeps everything trackable and protected. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before your trip and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. Deposit amounts vary by RV and trip length and are clearly shown before you confirm the booking. To avoid any deductions, return the RV on time, with the fuel and propane levels noted at pickup, and empty the holding tanks at the Blue Heron dump station or another nearby dump point. Pro tip: take timestamped photos at pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit intact.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Stearns during winter?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Stearns, KY is a hidden gem for travelers who love quiet trails and frosty mornings on the Cumberland Plateau. Winter daytime highs typically sit between 40 and 50 degrees, with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s, so look for rigs with a working furnace, insulated underbelly, and heated holding tanks. Blue Heron Campground closes seasonally, but Bandy Creek typically stays open year-round with electric hookups, making it a strong winter base. You can still hike to frozen-edge waterfalls at Yahoo Falls and Cumberland Falls, often with the trails nearly to yourself. Local tip: ask your host to top off propane before pickup, you'll burn through it faster than expected on cold nights.
