Campgrounds and RV parks near Strathmoor Village, KY

The main draw is Louisville itself. Churchill Downs, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Kentucky Derby Museum, and the Louisville Zoo are all within a short drive, and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail radiates out from the city. Families often pair a downtown day with a visit to the Kentucky Science Center on Main Street. Across the river, Falls of the Ohio State Park has exposed Devonian fossil beds along the riverbank, and the Big Four pedestrian bridge links waterfront paths back into Louisville. At Charlestown State Park, over 15 miles of trails ranging from easy to rugged run through forest with wildflowers, fossil outcrops, and karst topography including large sinkholes, plus a boat ramp for Ohio River access and the historic Portersville Bridge leading to the Rose Island ruins.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for RV travel in the Louisville area. Mid-April to mid-May and mid-September to mid-October are the most comfortable stretches, with autumn typically drier and less variable and spring offering longer days. Spring is also the wettest stretch, and May averages the greatest precipitation of the year, around 130 mm. Summer is hot and humid. The air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from July through August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and shaded sites are worth booking early. Charlestown State Park's campground has limited shade in the main loops, so heat management matters for July and August stays. Winter camping is possible but limited. From December to February, Louisville has occasional days that never warm above freezing, and the city averages 13 days a year that remain below 32°F. Louisville North Campground operates year-round, while Charlestown State Park's campground and some smaller private parks reduce services or close loops in the coldest weeks.

Private RV parks close to the city center are utilitarian. Louisville North Campground is a working overnight-style park in Clarksville, Indiana, with full hookups and an on-site fuel and propane stop, though maneuvering can be tight. Railroad tracks run near the property, and campers frequently mention train noise during late and early hours. Charlestown State Park is a different experience. The large campground features full-hookup AA sites with water, sewer, and electricity, plus Class A sites with electricity only, and modern comfort stations with hot showers. Expect wide sites, limited shade in parts of the loops, and a campground located roughly two miles inside the main park entrance, so plan arrivals accordingly.
