Campgrounds and RV parks near Versailles, KY

The Kentucky River is the main draw close to town. Camp on the Kentucky has a boat ramp with access to boating, jet skiing, and paddling on the river's palisades stretch, and nearby campgrounds put anglers within reach of the same water. Elkhorn Creek RV Park sits on a stream popular for smallmouth bass fishing and float trips. Inland, during the Kentucky Horse Park's Main Season, April through October, visitors can enjoy live equine presentations which include the Hall of Champions Show, Parade of Breeds, and the Big Barn Stall-Side Chat, plus the International Museum of the Horse, children's pony rides, and horseback trail rides. The park is also central to bourbon-trail day trips, with several distilleries clustered around Versailles and Woodford County.

Central Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, with July highs averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, and winters are cold enough that overnight lows regularly drop below freezing from December through February. Spring is the wettest stretch of the year, while fall tends to be drier and often the most comfortable for camping. Peak camping season runs roughly April through October, aligning with the Kentucky Horse Park's main event calendar. Premium demand weeks around major equestrian events carry a five-night minimum. Winter camping is possible but limited: at Kentucky Horse Park, B loop and D loop are open during the off-season from November 1 to March 31, with reservable sites B77 to B130 and D207 to D260. D loop sites have electric only, while B loop sites have water and electric, and water is also available at dump stations if needed. Riverside private parks along the Kentucky River are most active from late spring through early fall, when boating, swimming, and fishing conditions are best. Snow and ice are possible in January and February and can affect road access on the narrow, hilly roads leading to river campgrounds.

Roads to the river campgrounds are narrow, hilly, and winding, with the last stretches often ending on dead-end country lanes. Drivers with larger rigs should take the approaches slowly and check campground directions in advance rather than relying only on GPS. Cell service and Wi-Fi can be spotty at the more remote riverside sites. Kentucky Horse Park Campground is the most full-service option in the area, with water and 20, 30, and 50 amp electric services at all sites, two bathhouses, two dump stations, two laundry facilities, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and basketball courts, plus a camp store and playground. Private parks along the Kentucky River tend to be smaller and more rustic, with a mix of full-hookup RV sites and primitive tent sites, picnic tables, fire pits, and river access. Kentucky State Parks prohibits the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the emerald ash borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds.
