Overview of campgrounds near Wellington
Wellington is a small home-rule city inside Louisville, Kentucky, located in the Upper Highlands along Bardstown Road near the Watterson Expressway (I-264). Downtown Louisville sits roughly 6 miles to the northwest, and Louisville International Airport is about 5 miles away. There are no campgrounds within Wellington itself, so RV travelers use nearby parks as a base for Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the Louisville waterfront, and the Highlands dining district.
Most RV parks that serve the Wellington area cluster along the I-65 corridor south of downtown or across the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana. Options within a short drive include Louisville North Campground, Brooks RV Park and Campground, Add-more RV Park, Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park, and Louisville South KOA Holiday. Most of these sit within a 20 to 30 minute drive of downtown, providing convenient access for weekend stays or longer visits.
State-managed camping is also within reach. Taylorsville Lake State Park lies southeast of Louisville and offers RV sites with electric and water hookups. Louisville-area private parks generally provide full hookups, room for larger rigs, laundry, and Wi-Fi.
Things to do near Wellington
Louisville's main attractions are a short drive from Wellington. Visitors can tour Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, and Louisville Slugger Field. Louisville Mega Cavern offers underground tours and tram rides, and Mammoth Cave National Park is a longer day trip to the south.
Water and trail activities are close by. Taylorsville Lake State Park sits on a 3,050-acre reservoir with bass, bluegill, and crappie fishing, and its 16-mile trail system is managed for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Falls of the Ohio State Park across the river is known for exposed Devonian fossil beds.
Families staying at Louisville South KOA Holiday, Louisville North Campground, or Brooks RV Park and Campground can pair distillery visits along the Bourbon Trail with the Louisville Zoo, waterfront parks, and downtown museums.

The camping season around Louisville generally runs from March through November, though several private parks remain open year-round with reduced winter services. Commercial parks such as Louisville South KOA Holiday, Louisville North Campground, and Brooks RV Park and Campground typically operate through the winter, while state park campgrounds scale back water service when freezing weather sets in.
Spring and early summer bring peak demand. Kentucky Derby weekend on the first Saturday in May sells out RV sites across the metro area many months in advance, and bourbon-related events in nearby Bardstown also tighten availability. Summer highs often reach the upper 80s with high humidity, and primitive sites without hookups can become uncomfortable in July and August.
Fall is the most comfortable stretch for RV travel in the region, with lower humidity and cooler nights. Kentucky State Parks operate year-round campgrounds, but the state cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. Winter stays are practical at full-hookup commercial parks; expect reduced amenities at public campgrounds.

How to book a campsite near Wellington
Private RV parks in the area, including Louisville North Campground, Brooks RV Park and Campground, Add-more RV Park, Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park, and Louisville South KOA Holiday, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For Derby week and major event weekends, book several months out.
Kentucky State Park campgrounds, including Taylorsville Lake State Park to the southeast, use the state's central reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance, and campsites can be occupied by a maximum of eight people. Friday and Saturday arrivals require a two-night minimum stay.
Kentucky prohibits the importation of firewood from outside the state to help prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer. Firewood is available for sale at state park campgrounds.
What to expect at campgrounds near Wellington
Sites near Louisville lean urban. Expect paved or gravel pads, full hookups at the private parks, and easy access to interstates. Brooks RV Park and Campground sits south of the outer loop off I-65 at the Brooks exit, with concrete pads, creek-front sites, and 50-amp service that can handle rigs up to 50 feet. Add-more RV Park is located across the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana, at the I-65 and I-265 interchange, roughly a 20-minute drive to Churchill Downs.
Campers should carry leveling blocks, as sites in the rolling terrain of the region can require them. Cell service is reliable near the city but may be spotty at more remote state park sites. State park campgrounds typically offer electric and water at most sites, with fewer sewer hookups than private parks, and dump stations are standard.
