Campgrounds and RV parks near West Point, KY

Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area is the main draw for active RV travelers. The area offers hiking and mountain bike trails, equestrian routes, stream fishing for smallmouth bass and rainbow trout, hunting, and swimming spots along the creek. Overlooks along the trail system give views of the Ohio River and Otter Creek. History stops include the small riverfront town of West Point itself, which played a role in Civil War river traffic. Louisville sits about 30 to 45 minutes north, opening up Bourbon Trail distilleries, the Louisville Slugger Museum, and Churchill Downs. Fort Knox and the nearby Patton Museum of Leadership are also within a short drive, giving families rain-day and evening options beyond the campground.

Summer is the busiest camping season around West Point. Peak weekends coincide with Kentucky Derby events in early May and with school-vacation travel from June through early August, when sites at Louisville South KOA Holiday and Otter Creek fill well in advance. Humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common, so shaded sites and awnings help. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable conditions. Mid-April through mid-May and mid-September through mid-October are widely considered the best travel windows, with milder temperatures and lower humidity. Fall foliage along the Ohio River bluffs typically peaks in mid to late October, and some campgrounds host Halloween weekends with trick-or-treating loops. Winter is quiet. The Otter Creek recreation area remains open year-round from dawn to dusk, but many private RV parks reduce services, winterize water lines, and close modern restrooms from roughly November through April. Self-contained rigs can often still find a site, but travelers should confirm hookup availability before arriving.

Terrain around West Point is a mix of Ohio River bottomland and wooded ridges climbing toward Fort Knox and the Knobs. Some private parks sit near US-31W or I-65 and can carry road noise, so interior loops are usually the quieter choice. Otter Creek elevations range from about 390 to 690 feet, with forested cover across most of the tract. Hookups vary. Longview RV Park advertises full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, a stocked pond, a dog park, and pickleball courts, while Otter Creek offers a mix of electric, electric and water, primitive sites, and cabins. Bring leveling blocks, as several campgrounds in the region have uneven sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable close to Louisville and can drop in the Otter Creek interior.
