Campgrounds and RV parks near Wheelwright, KY

Wheelwright sits in Floyd County in the eastern Kentucky coalfields, a small former company town tucked into the Appalachian Mountains. RV travelers use it as a base for the surrounding state parks, lakes, and ATV trail systems that stretch across the Kentucky-Virginia border. The closest developed camping option is Carr Creek State Park, a Kentucky State Parks facility on Carr Creek Lake with a 39-site campground and a full-service marina. The park features the longest sand beach in the Kentucky State Parks system. To the east, Breaks Interstate Park has 138 campsites in a forested area along the Big Sandy River and near the Virginia and Kentucky line, in a canyon often called the Grand Canyon of the South. North of Wheelwright, Paintsville Lake State Park sits on Paintsville Lake, which covers approximately 1,139 acres extending into parts of Morgan County, and offers full-hookup lakeside sites. Across the state line in southwestern Virginia, Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground in Big Stone Gap and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park in Grundy round out the options, with Southern Gap serving as a trailhead for the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon system.

Kentucky State Parks handle reservations through ReserveAmerica, letting visitors reserve campground, lodging, marina, and day-use locations online. Lodge rooms, cottages, and campsites can be reserved up to one year in advance online or by phone, and Carr Creek State Park and Paintsville Lake State Park both use this system. Breaks Interstate Park uses its own reservation platform on breakspark.com rather than the Virginia or Kentucky state portals, since the park is jointly operated by both states. Reservations are recommended and can be made up to 11 months in advance, and a limited number of first-come, first-served sites are available when the campground is not full. Privately operated options such as Jessie Lea RV Park and Campground book directly through the property. The Breaks Interstate Park reservation system now also lists full hook-up campsites, primitive campsites, and cabins at Southern Gap, so Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park bookings run through the same portal.
