RV camping near Wilmore, Kentucky
Wilmore sits in Jessamine County in the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky, about a 25-minute drive south of Lexington and within easy reach of the Kentucky River Palisades. RV travelers use it as a base for horse country, bourbon country, and river recreation, with most nearby campgrounds clustered along the Kentucky River and around the Lexington metro.
Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground sits high on the Kentucky River bank near Salvisa, less than 30 miles from downtown Lexington and roughly the same distance from Frankfort, with a view of the Kentucky River Palisades, and it stays open year round with full hookups and a marina. Camp on the Kentucky offers a smaller, family-run setting on the palisades of the Kentucky River with 30 RV sites, back-in sites with water, electric, and sewer, and pull-through sites with water and electric, and Elkhorn Creek RV Park serves travelers headed toward Frankfort and the northern distilleries.
For larger rigs and family trips, the Kentucky Horse Park campground north of Lexington has 260 campsites with electrical and water hookups, paved pads, two bathhouses, two dump stations, and laundromats. Pioneer Playhouse RV campground in Danville adds a small-town option south of Wilmore for shorter overnight stops.
Things to do near Wilmore
The Kentucky River Palisades dominate the local landscape. The Kentucky River Palisades is a region anchoring a 450-million-year-old ecosystem of limestone cliffs, deep gorges, springs, and an intricate cave system, with calm pools for kayaking, tubing, and fishing. Riverside campgrounds such as Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground and Camp on the Kentucky put boat ramps, docks, and shoreline trails within walking distance of RV sites.
Horse country is the other major draw. The Kentucky Horse Park equine theme park is open for its main season April through October, Wednesday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm, and admission includes the International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, and the American Saddlebred Museum.
Bourbon travelers use Wilmore as a hub for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, with Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, and Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill all within an easy drive.

Peak RV season runs from late April through October, matching the Kentucky Horse Park's main equine-program season of April through October and the warm, humid summers typical of central Kentucky. Summer weekends and Kentucky Horse Park events fill sites quickly, and longer minimum night stays are required at most Kentucky state park campgrounds during holiday periods, so booking several months out is standard.
Spring is a wet stretch in the Bluegrass, with heavy rain common from March through May and occasional Kentucky River flooding that can affect low-lying riverfront sites. Fall is drier and cooler, with September and October offering strong foliage and lighter crowds on distillery tours.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Kentucky State Parks note that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and travelers are asked to contact the park directly during those months. At the Kentucky Horse Park, B loop and D loop remain open during the off-season from November 1 to March 31, with sites B77 to B130 and D207 to D260 available, D-loop sites offering electric only, and B-loop sites offering water and electric.

How to book campgrounds near Wilmore
Kentucky Horse Park Campground reservations can be made on ReserveAmerica.com, or by calling Reserve America at 888-459-7275 if you do not have internet access. The maximum reservation window is 12 months in advance, with a one-night minimum stay midweek, a two-night minimum for Friday or Saturday arrivals, and longer minimum stays during holiday periods. Maximum stay is 14 days unless approved by campground management.
Private parks such as Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground, Camp on the Kentucky, Pioneer Playhouse RV campground, and Elkhorn Creek RV Park book directly through their own websites or by phone, with daily, weekly, and monthly rates available at Cummins Ferry.
Kentucky State Parks prohibit the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale at state park campgrounds.
What to expect on-site
Most RV parks near Wilmore offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water, but full sewer at the pad is less common. At the Kentucky Horse Park all sites have water and 20, 30, and 50 amp electric services, with two bathhouses and two dump stations rather than in-site sewer, and riverfront parks like Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground provide full hookups with 30/50 amp service, a swimming pool, a private boat ramp with marina access, covered fishing docks, hiking trails, and disc golf.
Roads into some riverfront campgrounds are narrow, hilly, and curvy, and GPS routing sometimes misses the intended approach, so following the campground's own driving directions is safer for larger rigs. Some sites are not perfectly level and may need extra blocks.
Cell service varies. At Camp on the Kentucky, Verizon cell service is nearly non-existent, but free Wi-Fi is provided. Most campgrounds are pet-friendly on leash, and family amenities like pools, playgrounds, and disc golf are common at the larger parks.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmore%2C%20KentuckyDo I need a special license to drive an RV in Kentucky?
Good news: Kentucky does not require a special license or CDL to drive a standard RV. Your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Wilmore, whether it's a campervan, Class C motorhome, or travel trailer, as long as it's under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. Visiting from outside the US? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license works well. All RVezy renters must be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right through the platform so you can book with confidence. Pro tip: first time renting an RV? Pick a Class C or campervan for the easiest driving experience on Kentucky's rolling roads.

Booking your Wilmore RV trip is lower risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a grace period right after booking during which a full refund is available. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you cancel. Because RVezy handles cancellations centrally, you don't have to negotiate with individual hosts or decode different listing rules. If the host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your trip plans stay protected. Pro tip: review the current cancellation details on RVezy's Help Center before you book, and consider locking in early for Keeneland or Kentucky Derby weekends when availability disappears fast.

Wilmore and the surrounding Jessamine County area are very dog-friendly: leash up at the Kentucky Horse Park's paved trails, hike the dog-welcoming sections of Raven Run Nature Sanctuary just north of town, or stroll the riverfront at High Bridge Park. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules, then pack a tie-out, collapsible water bowl, and current vaccination records. Most Kentucky State Park campgrounds also welcome leashed pets.
parks.ky.gov/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in Wilmore?
Yes, RV delivery in Wilmore is one of the most useful perks on RVezy, especially if you've never towed or driven a larger rig. Many local hosts deliver to nearby campgrounds like Kentucky Horse Park Campground or Camp Nelson, or directly to a private property or rental driveway in Jessamine, Fayette, or Mercer counties. The host arrives, levels the RV, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and ask about setup at the Kentucky Horse Park for an effortless first time renting an RV.
kyhorsepark.com/visit/campground/How many miles can I drive on my Wilmore RV rental?

From Wilmore you're about 20 minutes to Lexington, 80 miles to Louisville, 90 miles to Cincinnati, around 140 miles to Mammoth Cave National Park, and roughly 110 miles to Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. Pro tip: before booking, add up your planned mileage including Bourbon Trail side trips and compare it to the host's included allotment to avoid surprise charges.

Fort Boonesborough State Park, about 35 minutes east on the Kentucky River, has riverside sites and a swimming pool. Whispering Hills RV Park in Georgetown (around 45 minutes) is a longtime favorite with a pool and laundry. Lake Reba RV Park in Richmond rounds out the list. Pro tip: book Kentucky Horse Park sites 3 to 6 months ahead for the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event in late April.
parks.ky.gov/parks/recreationparks/fort-boonesborough/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Wilmore?
Wilmore's sweet spot for RV camping runs late April through late October, with two standout windows. Spring (April to early June) brings Bluegrass wildflowers, Keeneland's spring race meet, and daytime highs in the 65 to 78 F range. Fall (mid-September through October) is arguably even better: crisp 55 to 75 F days, vivid foliage along the Kentucky River Palisades, and Keeneland's fall meet. July and August are warm and humid (mid 80s to low 90s) but great for swimming at Herrington Lake. Winters are mild but wet, and some hosts offer winterized rentals. Pro tip: book a Wilmore RV trip in October for the combo of weather, color, and bourbon distillery tours.
weather.gov/lmk/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Wilmore?
Yes, and you'll be in good hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, the water system, propane, slide-outs, and dumping, so you won't be left to figure it out alone. Wilmore's surrounding roads are first-timer friendly: US-68 and the Bluegrass Parkway are wide, well-maintained, and gently rolling. Stick to a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Wilmore for the easiest handling, especially through downtown Lexington. Pro tip: ask the host to record a short video of the orientation on your phone so you can replay it at the campground. RVezy's 24/7 roadside assistance is always one call away if you need help with anything mechanical.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something breaks down during my Kentucky RV trip?
You're not on your own. Every Wilmore RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, tows, and mechanical breakdowns anywhere in Kentucky and beyond. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions, like how to relight a pilot light or reset the inverter. If you're parked at a remote spot like Red River Gorge and cell service is spotty, drive to higher ground or the nearest ranger station. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave Wilmore so help is one tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Wilmore RV rental out of state or to Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Wilmore opens up much of the eastern US. Most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel to popular spots like the Great Smoky Mountains, Nashville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Mammoth Cave. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you're planning a long haul, like a motorhome rental from Wilmore up the Bourbon Trail and on to Cincinnati, confirm mileage allowance and cross-state policies in writing through the RVezy chat.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Plan around 8 to 12 miles per gallon for Class A and Class C motorhomes, 14 to 20 MPG for campervans, and 12 to 18 MPG for trucks towing travel trailers. Kentucky gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Wilmore has convenient fill-ups at stations along US-68. For a 4-day, 400-mile RV trip from Wilmore to Mammoth Cave and back in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: GasBuddy works well in central Kentucky, and filling up in Nicholasville or Lexington is usually cheaper than smaller towns along the Bourbon Trail.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wilmore?
For peak weekends, the earlier the better. Kentucky State Parks open campsite reservations well in advance through the state's reservation system, and popular weekends like Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day can fill quickly. Kentucky Horse Park Campground books up 3 to 6 months ahead for the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event in late April. Private parks like Whispering Hills and Lake Reba RV Park usually have more flexibility, but reserve 4 to 8 weeks ahead in summer. Pro tip: midweek arrivals are dramatically easier to book and let you experience the best campgrounds near Wilmore without weekend crowds.
parks.ky.gov/reservations/What are the driving conditions like around Wilmore?
Wilmore sits in gently rolling Bluegrass countryside, and driving is straightforward for an RV rental in Kentucky. US-68 (the historic Harrodsburg Road) is the main route and handles RVs easily, as do the Bluegrass Parkway and I-75 just east of town. Two local quirks to know: the High Bridge area south of Wilmore has steep grades down to the Kentucky River (use low gear), and downtown Lexington has some low railroad bridges, so stick to truck-friendly routes if your RV is over 12 feet tall. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly. Pro tip: avoid I-75 through Lexington during weekday rush hour (4 to 6 pm) and you'll have a relaxing drive.
transportation.ky.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wilmore?
Most campgrounds near Wilmore offer the full RV experience. Kentucky Horse Park Campground has 30/50-amp full hookups, a dump station, laundry, showers, and a pool. Fort Boonesborough State Park provides water and electric sites with a centralized dump station and a beach on the Kentucky River. Many private parks like Whispering Hills offer full hookups, WiFi, and propane refills. For dump and water top-offs between stops, you'll find truck stop facilities along I-75 near Lexington. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, since older Kentucky parks often have varied connections.
parks.ky.gov/parks/What features and amenities come with most RV rentals in Wilmore?
Wilmore RV rentals on RVezy come well-equipped. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 2 to 8 people, climate control with both furnace and AC, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many Class C and Class A listings also include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, smart TV, and even WiFi hotspots. Campervans tend to be more minimalist but include the essentials for two travelers. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list carefully if you need specific items like a built-in coffee maker, blackout shades, or a backup camera, all common requests for a family RV trip in Wilmore and the Bluegrass region.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmore%2C%20KentuckyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Wilmore offer plenty of optional add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linen and kitchen packages, bike racks, camp chairs, propane fire pits, generators, and pet packages, with prices set by each host. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Wilmore, Nicholasville, or Lexington, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation included. Many hosts also offer delivery to Kentucky Horse Park, Fort Boonesborough, or your private property. Mileage policies vary, so confirm included miles and overage rates in the listing. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking rather than asking last minute, and request an early pickup or late drop-off to maximize your Bluegrass adventure.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmore%2C%20KentuckyHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and your funds are protected until your trip starts. Each host sets a refundable security deposit (commonly several hundred to a few thousand dollars for an RV rental in Wilmore), which is held but not charged unless there is damage or excessive cleaning needed after your trip. The deposit is released back to your card after a smooth return. Never pay a host outside the platform, as that voids your protection plan and roadside assistance. Pro tip: take a quick video walkthrough of the RV at pickup and drop-off in Wilmore so any pre-existing wear and tear is clearly documented.
