Campgrounds and RV parks near Woodland Hills, KY

Most of the area's outdoor activity is concentrated along the Ohio River and in the parks just north of Louisville. At Charlestown State Park, visitors can hike over 15 miles of trails ranging from easy to rugged, passing wildflowers, fossil outcroppings, and karst topography with large sinkholes. The notable Rose Island trail leads to the ruins of a 1920s-era amusement park, and the Ohio River offers fishing for species like bass, bluegill, and catfish. In Louisville itself, families can build a day around Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Louisville Science Center, the Louisville Zoo, and the Big Four pedestrian bridge across the Ohio River. Kentucky Kingdom amusement and water park is another common stop for family RV trips.

The Louisville metro has a humid, four-season climate, so timing matters for an RV trip. Winters are cold and summers are hot and muggy, with frequent thunderstorms. Spring and summer months are characterized by changeable, wet weather, with March bringing the greatest total rainfall and May typically the single wettest month, often producing strong storms that can disrupt outdoor plans. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping. Mid-April to mid-May and mid-September to mid-October are the preferred travel periods, with autumn generally drier and steadier in temperature. Summer brings heat, humidity, and peak demand at private RV parks tied to Louisville events, especially around the Kentucky Derby in early May, when sites near downtown book out far in advance. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but expect freezing nights. Louisville usually has nights with freezing temperatures dispersed from October to March, and roughly four nights a year drop to 10 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Some state-park loops and water systems may be on reduced winter service, so confirm hookups before booking.

Expect a clear split between urban full-service RV parks and a more traditional state-park experience. Louisville North Campground is a compact, year-round RV park geared to travelers visiting the city, with paved pull-through sites accommodating rigs up to 70 feet plus back-in options, 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups, water and sewer, Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, laundry, showers, a dump station, playground, general store, and on-site propane. Railroad tracks run behind the property, and campers commonly note train noise during late-night and early-morning hours. Charlestown State Park feels very different, with paved sites, electric-only and full-hookup options for RVs up to about 40 feet, year-round operation, and minimal shade across most sites. Cell service is generally workable in the metro parks and patchier inside the state park.
