Campgrounds and RV parks near Woodlawn Park, KY

Downtown Louisville is a short drive east and covers most rainy-day plans: the Louisville Slugger Museum, Muhammad Ali Center, Kentucky Science Center, and the bourbon distilleries on Whiskey Row. Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum, and the Louisville Mega Cavern are also within the metro area. The Ohio River waterfront, Waterfront Park, and the pedestrian Big Four Bridge give kids room to move without leaving the city. On the Indiana side, Charlestown State Park covers over 5,100 acres with more than 15 miles of trails, wildflowers, fossil outcroppings, karst sinkholes, and over 70 species of birds. The historic Portersville Bridge crosses to the former Rose Island amusement park site, a popular hike with families.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Louisville. Mid-April to mid-May and mid-September to mid-October are the mildest stretches, with autumn generally drier and more stable and spring offering longer daylight. Wildflowers along the Charlestown State Park trails peak in April and early May. Summers are hot and humid. July is typically the hottest month, with average highs near the upper 80s Fahrenheit, and the air can feel uncomfortably humid during July and August. Thunderstorms are common through the warm season, and May is typically the wettest month. Kentucky Derby week in early May drives heavy demand on Louisville-area campgrounds, so reserve well ahead. Winters are cold and damp. Louisville sees occasional days that never warm above freezing, averaging about 13 sub-freezing days a year. Some private RV parks stay open year-round, but water hookups and amenities can be limited during hard freezes, and Indiana state parks winterize full-hookup sites from November through April.

Charlestown State Park's campground has around 192 sites, split between 60 full-hookup and 132 electric-only, with a 45-foot maximum RV length and 30/50-amp service. Sites are on paved pads with modern comfort stations and a dump station. Water is shut off and full-hookup sites are winterized from November through April, so plan for reduced services in the cold months. Only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite; additional vehicles use the overflow lot. Private parks in the Louisville corridor lean toward full hookups, level pads, and easy interstate access rather than deep woods. Cell coverage is strong across the metro area. Expect road noise near the I-65 and I-265 corridors and pack for humid, buggy conditions from June through August.
