Campgrounds and RV parks near Bernice, LA

Fishing drives most trips to this part of Louisiana. Some of the state's record fish catches have been landed in Lake D'Arbonne, including catfish, sac-a-lait (crappie) and bass, and both state parks have piers, boat launches, and rentals for kayaks, canoes or flat-bottomed boats. Lake Claiborne is routinely stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, striped bass, and more, and its open water attracts water-skiers and pleasure boaters as well. On land, Lincoln Parish Park offers a 10-mile trail with challenging terrain for advanced riders and beginners, plus the Waterfall MTB Hub leading to five flow trails. Lake Claiborne State Park adds the six-mile White Tail Hiking Trail and the five-mile Whispering Pines Bike Trail, along with two 18-hole disc golf courses. Lake D'Arbonne State Park has tennis courts, a seasonal swimming pool, and its own disc golf course near the group camp.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in north Louisiana. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers, and active fishing, though severe thunderstorms and tornado risk peak in April and May. October and early November are typically cooler and pleasant, with fall color in the pines and hardwoods around the lakes. Summers are hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the low 90s and heat indices higher. Lincoln Parish Park's sandy beach and swimming area are open Memorial Day to Labor Day with a lifeguard on duty, and the Lake D'Arbonne State Park pool operates on a similar summer schedule. Lakes stay busy with boaters and skiers on weekends, and tropical moisture can push heavy rain into the region from August through October. Winters are mild but wet. Hard freezes occur but rarely last long, and the state parks remain open 365 days a year. Expect fewer crowds, easier reservations, and the occasional cold snap that can drop overnight lows near or below freezing.

The landscape is rolling pine hills, not flat coastal marsh. Roads to the state parks are paved but narrow in spots, and the terrain at Lake Claiborne State Park requires leveling blocks for most RVs. Lake D'Arbonne State Park offers a mix of standard and premium sites, along with cabins, lodges, and a group camp for larger parties. Lincoln Parish Park is very RV-friendly, with full hookups on concrete pads and both pull-through and back-in sites, including waterfront spots with gated patios over the water, and the park is gated for security. Cell service in the immediate Bernice area is generally usable but can be spotty on backroads and lake coves. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, and expect to share the water with anglers early and late in the day.
