Campgrounds and RV parks near Cotton Valley, LA

Fishing drives most trips. Lake Bistineau produces black crappie, largemouth bass, yellow bass, catfish, bluegill, and red-ear sunfish, with the traditional yo-yo season starting in January and continuing through spring, summer, and early fall. Cypress Black Bayou is also popular for bass and catfish, with dedicated fishing piers around its two lakes. On land, Lake Bistineau State Park has a disc golf course, roughly 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a 6-mile equestrian trail for guests bringing their own horses. Canoes and kayaks are available for paddling out to the cypress-lined islands. Cypress Black Bayou is a 340-acre park with a 3,000-acre and 700-acre lake, a sand beach, cabins, a petting zoo, and nature trails. The on-site zoo and nature center make it a strong pick for families with kids.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping in this part of Louisiana. Daytime highs are moderate, humidity is manageable, and campgrounds are less crowded than during summer holiday weekends. Summer camping is popular for the water, but expect heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Anglers should plan around Lake Bistineau's annual drawdown. LDWF typically requests the water control structure be opened in late July or early August, and the lake dewaters at a rate of four to six inches per day until it reaches a maximum drawdown of eight feet below pool stage, with the rate varying depending on rainfall. The drawdown structure is closed on or around November 15, allowing the lake to refill during the waterfowl season and ahead of early spring recreational use. During the drawdown, public boat access continues at designated launches, but shorelines and boat lanes shift, so confirm launch conditions before towing a boat. Winter is mild but wet, and parish burn bans are common in dry stretches.

Sites in this area lean shaded and wooded rather than open pads. Cypress Black Bayou offers spacious sites, many lakeside or near-lake, with a mix of full and partial hookups, 30/50-amp electric, a renovated bathhouse, and a dump station near the exit. At Lake Bistineau State Park, expect state-park style improved sites with water and 20/30/50-amp electric, and a dump station on site rather than sewer at each pad. Restrooms and showers are within walking distance of most loops. Cell coverage is workable but not fast, and Wi-Fi is not provided at most sites. Practical notes for RVers: bring bug spray, watch for alligators and snakes around Cypress Black Bayou and Bistineau shorelines, and check parish burn-ban status before planning a campfire. Pets are generally welcome on leash.
