Camden camping overview
Camden sits on the midcoast of Maine, where the Camden Hills meet Penobscot Bay. RV travelers use the town as a base for hiking, harbor days, and lighthouse drives between Rockland and Belfast. Most campgrounds cluster within a fifteen-minute drive of the harbor along US Route 1.
The anchor option is Camden Hills State Park, roughly two miles north of downtown on Route 1, with 107 sites including 44 water and electric hookups and RV lengths up to 40 feet. Private options include Megunticook Campground By the Sea in Rockport, an oceanfront park on Penobscot Bay, and Camden Hills Campground, also in Rockport, which offers full hookup RV sites and seasonal stays.
Inland alternatives include Mic Mac Cove Camp Ground and Sennebec Lake Campground, both freshwater lakefront properties a short drive west of Camden. Together these five properties cover coastal, mountain, and lakeside camping styles within the same trip radius.
Things to do near Camden
Camden Hills State Park offers about 30 miles of hiking trails accessed from five major trailheads. The signature route climbs Mount Battie for a panoramic view of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay; a paved auto road reaches the summit for travelers who prefer to drive. Mount Megunticook, the highest peak in the range, is a moderate foot climb.
Down in the harbor, visitors board windjammer day sails, tour the schooner fleet, and browse the Camden and Rockport waterfronts. The Farnsworth Art Museum and Maine Lighthouse Museum sit ten minutes south in Rockland.
On the water, guests kayak Megunticook Lake, swim at Barrett's Cove, and fish for bass and pickerel. Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse and Owls Head Light are easy half-day drives from any of the listed campgrounds.

The main RV camping season on the midcoast runs from mid-May through mid-October. Private parks generally operate May through October, while Camden Hills State Park's campground opens in April and stays open through early December, with winter camping offered only in rustic shelters by phone reservation.
July and August are peak. Weekends coincide with the Rockland Lobster Festival and North Atlantic Blues Festival, and coastal sites fill quickly around holidays. Book eight to twelve weeks out for July and August weekends. Reservations for the Maine State Parks summer season generally open in late winter.
September delivers warm days, cool nights, and thinner crowds. Around early September, Camden Hills State Park shifts many sites to first-come, first-served, which suits flexible RV travelers. Foliage color in the Camden Hills typically peaks in early to mid October. Winter closes most private parks entirely.
How to book Camden campgrounds
Camden Hills State Park takes family camping reservations through the Maine State Parks reservation system, and by phone at 207-236-3109 in season or 207-236-0849 off-season. The summer reservation window opens in late winter and popular weekends sell out fast. A portion of sites is held as first-come, first-served, and from early September walk-up availability expands as reservations wind down.
Private parks including Megunticook Campground By the Sea and Camden Hills Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone; a deposit is typically required at booking. Sennebec Lake Campground and Mic Mac Cove Camp Ground also take reservations directly. For holiday weekends and festival dates, secure a confirmed site before rolling into town.
What to expect at Camden campgrounds
Sites in the Camden area are typically wooded and shaded, with mixed pine and hardwood cover. Camden Hills State Park sites are spacious and generally private, with flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and water and electric at 44 of the 107 sites; there are no sewer hookups at individual sites. Some sites near Route 1 pick up road noise from passing traffic.
Big rigs fit at Camden Hills State Park up to 40 feet, and private parks like Megunticook Campground By the Sea and Camden Hills Campground advertise full hookup sites suited to larger rigs. Cell service is inconsistent along the coast, and campground Wi-Fi tends to be slow.
Bring layers. Coastal fog and cool evenings are common even in July, and black flies and mosquitos peak in late May and June.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Camden, ME
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Camden, ME?
RV rental in Camden is affordable for a popular Midcoast Maine destination. Most travel trailers start around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes typically run $200 to $325, and Class A rigs range from $300 to $500 nightly during peak summer. You can keep costs down by booking midweek, traveling in late May, early June, or mid-September after the leaf-peepers head home, or filtering for cheap RV rental Camden listings with longer-stay discounts. Many Camden hosts offer 10 to 20 percent off weekly bookings, so even a 5-night Penobscot Bay trip can drop your nightly rate noticeably. Lock in your dates early for July and August, when the Camden Windjammer Festival draws large crowds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Camden,MaineWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Camden, Maine?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Camden, ME. Maine does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for recreational vehicles used personally, even larger Class A motorhomes. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID confirmation happens right through the platform when you book, so there is no paperwork waiting at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they are cleared to roll toward Mount Battie.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RVezy's protection package included with my Camden RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Camden through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit US Route 1 with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle during your trip, which is reassuring if a pinecone dings the awning at Camden Hills State Park or a gravel road tosses a rock at the windshield. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), with multiple tiers depending on how much extra cushion you want. It provides meaningful financial protection so you can focus on lighthouses and lobster rolls.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Camden RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that window, refunds depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. Because the policy is platform-wide and not listing-specific, you don't have to compare fine print between hosts in Camden, Rockport, and Lincolnville. If a major coastal storm is forecast for Penobscot Bay near your trip dates, contact RVezy support right away so they can walk you through your options before your check-in date.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Camden, ME?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Camden is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of motorhomes and travel trailers where dogs are welcome. Camden is one of the most dog-loving towns in Maine: leashed pups can hike the Mount Battie and Mount Megunticook trails inside Camden Hills State Park, splash around at Barrett's Cove on Megunticook Lake, and join you for outdoor dining at several harborside spots downtown. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and bring a leash since Maine State Parks require pets to be leashed at all times.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/about/pets_in_parks.shtmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Camden?
Yes, RV delivery in Camden is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer. Many RVezy hosts will drop the rig at Camden Hills State Park or your private rental driveway in town, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching and message the host with your campsite number. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, often free within a short radius of Camden and a per-mile rate beyond that. It's the stress-free way to enjoy a Camden RV trip without ever having to back into a wooded site.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/find_a_park/index.html?park_id=11How far can I drive on an RV rental from Camden?
You can roam far and wide on your Camden RV trip. Mileage policies are set by each host: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for road-trippers. From Camden, Acadia National Park sits about 80 miles north (roughly a 2 hour drive), Portland is about 80 miles south, Bar Harbor is around 85 miles up US Route 1, the White Mountains in New Hampshire are about 175 miles west, and Quebec City is roughly 350 miles away. Estimate your route before booking and filter for unlimited-mileage listings if you're planning a big Midcoast and Down East loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Camden,MaineWhere are the best campgrounds near Camden, Maine?
You have great choices for RV camping Camden. The top pick is Camden Hills State Park, just north of town on US Route 1 with over 100 wooded sites (many with water and electric hookups), a dump station, hot showers, and trailheads to Mount Battie right from the campground. Megunticook Campground by the Sea in Rockport offers oceanside sites with Penobscot Bay views and full hookups. Sennebec Lake Campground in Appleton has waterfront and water-view sites about 20 minutes inland, and Searsport Shores Ocean Campground sits about 30 minutes north right on the water. Book early for July and August.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/find_a_park/index.html?park_id=11When is the best time to rent an RV in Camden, ME?
Camden is a true four-season Midcoast town, and the sweet spot for an RV rental in Maine is late May through mid-October. June brings 65 to 75 degree days, lupines in bloom, and quieter campgrounds. July and August are peak with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s and warm nights in the 60s, perfect for swimming at Barrett's Cove. September and early October are a local favorite: crisp air, fall foliage on Mount Megunticook, and the Camden Windjammer fleet still in harbor. Camden Hills State Park's campground typically operates from mid-May through mid-October. Shoulder seasons mean lower rates and the same gorgeous scenery.
weather.gov/gyx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Camden a good idea?
Camden is one of the friendliest places in New England for first time renting an RV. US Route 1 through town is wide, well-maintained, and slows traffic naturally as you roll into Camden Harbor, so you won't be dodging highway chaos. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling jacks to the propane stove, and many local hosts offer delivery so you never have to drive the rig at all. With 24/7 roadside assistance included, you have plenty of backup. Book a smaller Class C or campervan rental Camden for your first trip, drive directly to Camden Hills State Park just north of downtown, and you'll feel like a pro by sunset.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on US Route 1 or a dead battery at Camden Hills State Park is a phone call, not a vacation-ender. The roadside team can dispatch help for tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. For non-emergency questions about how the rig operates, message your host directly through the app since they know their RV inside and out. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your Camden RV trip. Save both numbers in your phone before pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Camden RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Camden across New England is fair game, and many hosts also allow travel into the Canadian Maritimes (Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are popular). Message the host before booking to confirm cross-border travel is approved on their listing, since insurance coverage extends only when the host gives the green light. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. From Camden, fun multi-state loops include heading south through New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee (about 3.5 hours) or north up US Route 1 toward the Calais border crossing into New Brunswick (about 4 hours). Bring your passport for any border crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Camden RV trip?
Fuel is manageable in Maine if you plan a bit. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 MPG), and campervans can reach 18 to 22 MPG. Gas in the Camden and Rockland area typically runs a few cents above the national average, with stations clustered along US Route 1 in Rockport, Camden, and Lincolnville. For a classic Camden to Acadia loop (about 170 round-trip miles), budget roughly $60 to $100 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Rockland before heading north, since prices tend to climb closer to Bar Harbor.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Camden?
Book early, especially for Camden Hills State Park. Maine's State Park reservation system opens in early February each year for the upcoming season, and the most coveted hookup sites at Camden Hills often fill within hours for July and August weekends. Private campgrounds like Megunticook by the Sea and Searsport Shores Ocean Campground typically open reservations in winter. A portion of Camden Hills sites are reservable up to four months in advance, so midweek arrivals can sometimes snag a spot last minute. Aim for a 2-night minimum on weekends for more flexibility.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/camping/reservations/index.shtmlWhat are driving conditions like around Camden in an RV?
Driving an RV in and around Camden is genuinely pleasant. US Route 1 is the main artery, two lanes through downtown with reduced speed limits past the harbor and 45 to 50 mph between towns, with no major height restrictions or low bridges along the corridor. Watch for tight parking downtown (skip Bayview Street with a big rig and use the larger lots on Washington Street or at the Camden Snow Bowl). Summer brings slower-moving traffic between Rockport and Lincolnville Beach, especially Friday afternoons. Coastal fog can roll in on summer mornings, and fall leaf-peeper traffic can crawl from late September into mid-October. Drive the rig before 10 AM or after 6 PM to dodge the worst congestion.
maine.gov/mdot/travel/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Camden?
Campgrounds around Camden are well-equipped for RVs. Camden Hills State Park offers sites with water and electric hookups (no sewer), flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station near the entrance, potable water spigots, and firewood for sale. Private parks like Megunticook by the Sea in Rockport add full hookups (including sewer), laundry, and rec areas. If your site lacks sewer, the Camden Hills dump station handles waste before you leave, and you can refill fresh water at the same spigots. Bring a 25 to 50 foot drinking-water hose and a basic water pressure regulator, since some Midcoast Maine water lines run high-pressure and can stress RV plumbing.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/find_a_park/index.html?park_id=11What's included inside a typical RV rental in Camden?
Camden motorhome rental and travel trailer listings come well-stocked. Expect a real bed (or two), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning and a furnace for chilly Penobscot Bay nights), seatbelted seating for traveling passengers, and often a TV plus a generator or solar setup. Many Camden hosts include outdoor chairs, a propane grill, leveling blocks, and starter kits with toilet paper and basic linens. Wi-Fi varies by rig but cell service is solid through most of Knox and Waldo Counties. Scroll the listing's amenities list carefully so you know exactly what to bring, especially for a chilly shoulder-season RV camping Camden trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Camden,MaineWhat add-ons and pickup options are common for Camden RV rentals?
Camden hosts offer some genuinely helpful add-ons. Popular extras include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generator use, bike racks, kayak racks (great for Megunticook Lake), portable grills, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing the dog. Many hosts include unlimited mileage for in-state Maine trips, or set a generous 100 to 150 mile daily allowance with a modest per-mile overage. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville, or Hope, with delivery available for an extra fee. Use the Instant Book filter if you want to lock in dates fast, and confirm pickup and dropoff windows up front to avoid late-return fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Camden,MaineHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Camden?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking, never directly to the host in cash, which protects both sides. Your total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, taxes, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card before the trip and released after dropoff, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, return it with the same fuel and propane level, and dump tanks if required. Ask the host to do a quick joint walkaround so everything is documented together.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Camden during winter or shoulder season?
Yes, you can rent an RV in Camden well past leaf-peeping season, and winter brings a quieter, magical side of Midcoast Maine. Many local hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and stronger furnaces, which is exactly what you want when overnight lows dip into the teens from December through February. Camden Hills State Park's main campground closes for the winter, but day-use access for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the multi-use trails is a local favorite. Plan to use shore power where available, keep fresh water tanks topped up rather than connected to a frozen spigot, and consider a host who offers winterization support. Filter for Class C motorhomes or larger trailers with heated tanks if you're traveling between November and March.
